A level choices

I am taking bio and chem at a level, but i am stuck as to what i should pick for my third subject. Don’t suggest maths, it is unfortunately not a skill i was born with (by this i mean i will be lucky to get an 8). Right now i am stuck between economics, physics, and english lit. If anyone reading this does any of those subjects, i would appreciate information on what taking the subject is realistically like for a normal person who has a healthy relationship with their studies. Thanks for reading!

I do Eng Lit, I would recommend if you like to read. It's a heavy subject, but I enjoy it and it teaches you valuable essay writing skills. Do you know what you want to do after A-levels?

How are you finding these at gcse? Any ideas on what you want to do post-Alevel?
If maths isnt your thing then Id advise against physics, lots of crossover with maths and 40% of the marks are on GCSE level maths content applied to physics based scenarios.

Hey!

I’d maybe suggest having a bit of an early think about what you might be interested in studying at university, if university is something you’re interested in! From there you can look at entry requirements and the subjects required for that course, which might help you make a decision! Some unis will allow you to be more broad in your a level options, so you may be able to pick something you enjoy, rather than something that fits in with the others.

Also have a think about what skills each of these subjects can teach you, is there any you can get from one but not from another? And how this might help in whatever you decide to do post a-level! For example, I did all my a levels in humanities, so the first bit of scientific writing in my biological sciences degree was a challenge!

I’d potentially suggest English because of this, it might be good to help expand your worldview, and offer you study outside of the sciences, which would be helpful in keeping your options broad, as well as developing a wider skill set. Ultimately though, do something you will like studying, it will make it a lot easier to want to revise for!

Good luck!

Hey @Jenevieve3e,

I studied both A-Level Economics and A-Level English Literature. As mentioned above, Physics has significant cross-over with Maths so it may be best to avoid if you don't feel confident in your Maths ability. English Lit may be a good choice here as it's relatively straightforward and doesn't require a great deal of revision; on the other hand, Economics does require some revision but may have be more useful depending on what you intend to do post A-Level.

Before coming to any decision, I'd have a look through the specifications for both Econ and English Lit and see which one appeals to you most. If you enjoy reading and have strong essay-writing skills, English Lit might be perfect; if you want something slightly more STEM-adjacent to match your other subjects, Economics may be the way to go.

Hope this helps and best of luck with your choices,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
