Colleges as a stay at home students?

Hi, just got an offer for psychology at Durham. For which ever Uni I end up at me and my partner will be moving there locally for the time i’ll be attending. So i’m wondering 1, if what college I choose really matters as i’m not staying there. And 2, if there is a specific college that is better for students staying at home? Sorry if it sounds stupid, I haven’t seen anything similar posted anywhere 🙂

Well done on your offer. My daughter is studying Psychology at Durham and is loving it.

In terms of colleges - Durham make a big thing about it. In reality given that the vast majority of students only spend the 1st year "in" college it is little more than a hall of residence with a bar and (if catered) a dining hall.

It is certainly not a college in the sense that an Oxbridge college is where you live in typically for all years.

So to answer your question, your college choice is not really that important given that you won't be living there. But you may want to pick a college near you academic buildings so you can use it as a base for study/coffee if you have spare time between lectures.

Hello!

There are so many students in Durham who live in private accommodation whilst in university (even living-in students generally live out after their first year) so it is more common than you think! And whilst a lot of your decision making has been simplified given you're living out, your college still does matter if you want to get involved in college activities! If there's a sport you'd like to start/continue at university, or a hobby you'd like to keep up some colleges offer them! Of course most colleges offer the big ones (Football, Rowing, Taylor Swift society) but some colleges offer more niche activities and it might be worth taking a look at their JCR pages for that!

Hope this helps!

Hi!

I'm actually in a similar situation to you, being both a Psychology student as well as staying at home and commuting to university. 😊

I didn't actually rank my choices as I thought it wouldn't be relevant to me, however I've actually really enjoyed getting involved in college activities (I'm in St Aidans). Regardless of which college you get allocated, it's super easy to get involved in activities sand events, and to meet people. For this reason, there isn't really a particular college best for students staying at home, it would more-so depend on how involved you'd like to be in college life and perhaps if there are any certain societies or facilities from a certain college that you might like.

I'd recommend having a look and comparing different colleges, and seeing if there are any that appeal to you: https://www.durham.ac.uk/colleges-and-student-experience/colleges/. Like I previously said, no college is a bad one. 🙂

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions about commuting life/studying Psychology here at Durham!
