On Hold at Bristol Uni for Biomedical Science

My daughter has been placed on hold for Biomed at Bristol. Does anyone know their typical timeframe on decisions? She has heard back with offers on her others but this is her top choice! Thanks

There's information as to what being "on hold" means here: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/after-you-apply/your-application/decision/

Assuming your daughter's application was submitted before the 6pm deadline on 14 January, universities have until 13th May to make a decision. She might get a decision in a few days; but it might be a few months.

I just want to state one thing before she makes any decisions as I know a lot of people do this and fall into a pit fall before it is too late to make a decision.

Bristol uni’s Biomed course is not IBMS accredited, meaning if she wants to work as a Biomedical Scientist (a hospital diagnostic lab), she will not meet the standards.

If she doesn’t want to work in a hospital and go into research, that’s not an issue but she won’t be able to work as a BMS in one.

I can explain this further if you’d like as I don’t know if you or her are aware of this. Again, only saying as I’ve seen a lot of people thinking that going to a high ranking uni and getting a BMS degree makes you a BMS. It does not.

Th point is that the Bristol course is for those who DO NOT want to 'work in a lab' just endlessly processing other people's work.

Yeah, I understand that, however, I’ve run into a few work colleagues in the past who were not aware of this such as those who attended Bath uni who found out after graduating that they could not work in a diagnostic laboratory.

I believe one who found out in 2023 who knew they needed to do seven top up modules is still at uni doing them now and paying for them out of pocket as they were unaware of this. Thinking about it, I actually think it was two now but I don’t know what happened to the second one.

I’m just making people aware if they are unaware of this little fact as a lot of people think going to a high ranking uni or RG uni means the world is open to them in diagnostics laboratories, however, it actually limits them in some cases.

Just trying to bring this to people’s attention before they find out too late as I’ve seen before.

Those attending a Bristol Open Day are usually told in very direct terms that their course is research focussed, not a training ground for lab-skills. If Bath is dishonest and doesn't, that another reason for not selecting Bath as a choice.
