How much would you pay for barre / pilates / yoga as a student?

Hi! I’m a final-year uni student and was chatting with friends about fitness classes (barre / pilates / yoga etc), and I realised I have no idea what people actually think is reasonable price-wise.

For me personally (esp as a girl), I sometimes feel a bit intimidated or unconfident going to the gym, and I tend to prefer smaller studio classes where there’s more guidance, a calmer/friendlier vibe, and honestly just more feminine energy.

Genuinely curious...if you’re a student / recent grad:
Do you think boutique fitness studios are worth the price, or do they feel too expensive?
What’s the price range you’d feel comfortable paying per class?
How do you usually book classes? (ClassPass / PAYG / packs / membership / promos only)
What actually draws you into going to studio classes? (price, location, vibe, instructors, timings, etc.)

Would love to hear honest opinions!

Hey!
Would love to hear about other people's replies on this as I'm eager to see their thoughts. One of my new years resolutions is getting more into shape and I've personally been looking into puregym as they offer around £30 for a membership per month which can include a free consultation with a personal trainer + access to their classes. The classes can range from cycling to zumba so its a fun activity, though I believe they are public too! While our Uni gym is very cheap (around 15 pounds per month full access and free if you live in accommodation), I also struggle a little with the gym as I do not know how to use most of the equipment and get quite embarrassed. On the bright side it is January and everyone is also starting gym for the first time so you will likely find everyone in the same spot, looking confused and testing out equipment.

The pilates classes I've seen so far around my University are around £17.50+ per session or can total up to £240 for monthly passes (credit based e.g. 10 sessions total) which is a little out of my budget. With my budget, I may just end up sticking to guided classes at local gyms and later when confident moving onto own exercises. Hope your fitness journey goes well! Why not do a trial at a local gym to see if their general classes suit your needs first? I'm aware that pilates can often be a tricky start if you have not been before! I would also recommending giving Uni sports societies a go to build up that athleticism and have the social element. Cheer squads, yoga, dance, pilates and even pole may exist at your University so why not enquire!

Hope that helps,

Hey,

Interesting question! I just started yoga classes, so I’ll try my best to share my experience, as well as help you out.

Boutique Studios: They can be worth it if you’re someone who’s intimidated by big gyms. I believe there’s smaller groups and coaches offer more guidance there.

Yoga/ HotPod Yoga: Reasons as to why it’s so popular is because classes are small (usually under 10 people), students are friendly, and instructors tailor exercises based on your needs/ preferences. It’s also a more relaxed, personal vibe, which is the main reason I started going there often.

For me, a comfortable price per class is around £7-£12, however most people I know tend to just purchase memberships, as it ends up being more affordable. In my opinion, once it gets into the £15+ per class range, it starts to feel like a treat rather than something you can regularly practice.

I hope this helped, best of luck in your fitness journey!!

Hey,

I take part in the occasional yoga class at my university's gym (Lifestyle Fitness). I don't go to the gym in any other capacity. It costs £10 per class which I think is very affordable - I think I'd be comfortable paying up to £25 but no more. I book the classes sporadically as it depends on my work and university schedule, so I'm not on any permanent plan or membership.

The main reason I go to classes is to improve my technique; whilst I enjoy doing yoga at home, I don't always know if I'm in the correct position. In-person instructors can provide much more tailored advice.

Hope this helps and great question!

Hi! Love this question I'd also love to see what other people have to say about it

I go occasionally to yoga and pilates classes at my uni gym which is £8 per session which I think is a very good price, or free if you have a membership which works out to be about £30 a month. I used to have a membership which was great, because of the unlimited access to classes for free I was wayyyy more likely to go to classes a couple times a week. Recently I've been more busy and haven't been able to rationalise paying for a membership but because of that haven't been going to classes nearly as often which is a shame.

Personally, I think the only downside of going to yoga/pilates at a student and locals gym (very much not a boutique gym) is that you don't always know how busy the classes will be. They allow up to 20 people to book classes so sometimes at random times the classes will be a bit too full for my liking. But on the other hand sometimes it ends up being a very small group with less than 10 people which means you get so much more time with the instructor and it's just a better vibe.

Hi,

I go to a Yoga studio in a smaller town close to Uni, its slightly cheaper than city center classes, and generally quieter. The classes are £11 or you can get session packs. For example they run an 8 week Beginner yoga package for £59. Because it is an independent studio the class sizes are about 12 - 14 people max. Which I honestly prefer and there is a sort of community there because the classes are so small.

Generally, my focus isn't on the monthly cost but the per class cost. If I enjoy the activity and it is guaranteed to have me do some form of activity that week, versus choosing something cheaper/free that I will just skip then its worth the money. If anything sometimes I think the fact I paid for the class can be enough motivation to make me actually go when I don't feel like it, and usually I feel better after going.

It can feel a little expensive sometimes when I look at monthly costs, but If I think about how the hour class cost less than 1 hour of my part-time job pay, then it's okay. I think if I really found a fitness activity I loved I'd be willing to pay up to 2 hours worth of my pay check for an hour class. But yoga is mostly just the least evil of the available fitness activities in my mind, so less than 1 hour of pay for 1 hour of class seems reasonable.

Hi there!

I love doing pilates and yoga so I thought this would be great to answer!

For me, I have a gym membership for my uni gym, but I prefer to do classes in a private studio rather than at the gym. There are a few near me which range in price but they often have a student deal where you can get the classes a little bit cheaper. I do reformer pilates sometimes which is a bit more expensive and is around £13 for a class, although you can get deals if you buy multiple classes in a pack at once. I also like going to yoga or sometimes hot yoga which is fun and is usually around £10-12 too with a student card.

Our uni gym also does classes which are only around £4 and these are good too, I just like doing reformer pilates which they don't do! You can also get an all inclusive membership which means that you can get classes included for not much more than I pay per month so it would probably be worth doing. Have a look and see if your uni has a gym and does any similar classes as these will tend to be a little bit cheaper as you are a student there but they will still be just as good!

I have been meaning to look into barre as I think I want to start doing this, or at least try it as I think I would really enjoy it so I am going to look into this next but I would imagine this would be a similar price (around £10-15?)

I hope some of this helps!
