Yr12 - Thinking about applying to Durham - Do current students have any insights?

Im currently in year twelve studying Physics, Maths and Computer Science and I've been doing a bit of research on Durham (I hope to study Physics there), it seems like an excellent Uni academically and the city is beautiful and historic, I was wondering if any current students there have any insights for me. Be it study advice to more information about what the Uni life and experience is like at Durham I'd greatly appreciate anything. One thing I would like to know more about for sure is if there are any programs I could apply to.

Durham is great!

Accommodation is a bit of a pain as there are not enough student lets. You must organise each years accommodation months in advance.

Otherwise it’s great. Great community, nightlife, socialising, sport.

Some colleges are more errr ‘snotty’ than others and attract huge wealth with people even bringing their ponies to live near here so they can still ride. So depending on your level of income you might want to do your research on which colleagues are more down to earth. Most are a good mix of state school and private school people. Just the odd few who are in their own world and tend to be at the same few elite colleges.

Hi!

Whilst I do Economics (so quite different to Physics), Durham has been great for me academically and I've expanded my understanding of my field more than I honestly ever thought I could in two years. It also is incredibly welcoming, and feels like a community which is rare in university. Yes, they're are people I don't like and I don't love the cold especially but I love so many people here, my college and the societies I'm a part of. You'll love it here and you wouldn't have to try, I'm sure!
