What exactly do you mean by 'Creative Director' - and in which industry? And have you looked at job ads to see what the job you think you want actually requires in terms of education/experience?

Some unis view business and economics together as one a level so probably steer away from that combo.

Look at the uni courses you are thinking of doing to see if they specify any particular a-level subjects.
Hello! The good thing about creative direction is there are a lot of different routes in.

Speaking personally, a lot of CDs I know have come from backgrounds in design and brand, starting with degrees or work experience as Graphic Designers, usually for creative/advertising agencies. With that said though, people take U-turns in their careers. Some study/work in the film industry and move into creative direction as there's an overlap in skills and experience. Fashion is also a hotbed for Creative Directors, with graduates of degrees in Fashion, Branding, Textiles or Photography working their way up to these positions.

These days Creative Direction is a degree in itself, meaning that for students like yourself who are already considering the career can gain skills tailored to the role.

If you're thinking about studying, we offer courses in BA (Hons) Creative Direction and BA (Hons) Media, Marketing and Advertising which are both designed with the future of the creative industries in mind. However, many Creative Directors come from our BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Communication Design and Strategy courses, as well as fashion disciplines like BA (Hons) Fashion or BA (Hons) Fashion Communication.

Business and Economics are good fits for the strategic thinking and leadership needed as a CD, but it's also essential to be able to think and solve problems creatively, particularly across a range of disciplines (graphic design, social media, photo/video, copywriting). Media studies is a great start for this, and these skills can be developed further by a degree. If you're not already, it would probably be useful to familiarise yourself with various creative disciplines, particularly from the branding side of things as you'll need to be able to oversee creative campaigns holistically and understand the practice of graphic designers, photographers, videographers, and all those who make up the creative and brand teams in a company or agency.

I hope this is a helpful place to start. If you have any questions just let me know!

Best wishes,
Harry @ AUB
