oxford and gcses

hi, I was just curious as I want to study classics and apply to oxford, but i got a 6 in gcse maths and i feel as though that will be a large block to my application - my strong grades were in essays/language (9s/8s) subjects and i have worse grades in stem (a 7/ 3 6s) and I'm worried that this will affect my application. does anyone have any advice ? thank you

It might help to read some admissions reports for your subject from oxford because this will vary by course. For my course (only an offer holder) 90% of applicant have GCSEs between 7s and 9s. But, that doesnt mean that you need to only have 7s - 9s to receive an offer. They probably just tend to be that way because those are the ones that tend to apply to oxford. I would definitely still send in an application because other elements of your application will be more important, like the personal statement, any entrance exams/ essays and most importantly your interview. You have no idea what will happen, and they might be really impressed at ur interview, so a few 6s in unrelated subjects won't be as significant. (And if it helps, i got an offer even though I'm resitting an A level that I got a B in).

Doesn't matter if the subjects are significant - GCSEs are GCSEs, and the fact of the matter is that they are more likely to accept another candidate with similar skill in everything else but higher GCSEs because that is how they do admissions. You are at a disadvantage from your 6s (average offer holder probably has around 8-8.5 9/8s for reference) but Classics is one of the easier courses to get into.

1) GCSEs are interpreted contextually so it makes a difference whether you are got those at a high performing school or a more average school. A few 6s and 7s are not an issue if you are still one of the stronger students in your school cohort.

2) It does matter to an extent what subjects the weaker GCSEs are in. In the case of Maths it is not wholly unrelated (Maths is a core academic subject and ancient languages require logical skill which is a little maths-y.) But if you have done languages with high grades at GCSE then you have demonstrated language aptitude. And it is in your favour that your higher grades are in humanities subjects.

3) GCSEs are only part of the application and Classics has a policy of interviewing most of its applicants so you have a good chance of being interviewed which gives you a chance to impress there. Having strong written work will also be important.

As people have mentioned, the GCSE's are taken as a whole rather than on a subject basis. Saying this however, I got a seven in maths and a five in further maths and still received an offer for history - like you, I did very well in essay and humanities compared to stem. honestly, try not to worry about them as you cannot change them. as long as you apply with strong predicted alevels and be yourself in your personal statement you will be absolutely fine! good luck
