Quitting college to work full time.

Hiya.
Basically, im in my first year of college, doing 3 AS levels (English combined, Psychology & Media) and the college im going too is absolute rubbish, the teachers never turn up, the teachers that do turn up are really bad at teaching and as a consequence my work is suffering and ive started not turning up to lessons alot. Ive already made up my mind that im not going back in September for A2 as I have no intentions of going to uni anyway.

Ive been working as a christmas temp in a clothes shop over christmas and loved it and they want to keep me on, and now a permanent full time job has come up that i can have if I want it. However I don't know if I should take it or carry on with AS levels even though I am defiantly quitting after the exams anyway. I just dont know what to do, and I have no idea how to break it to my mum that I want to leave college. Maybe its not the right thing to do, I would love to work there full time but understand I should probably ride this year out to get AS levels atleast but is it worth it even though im not going to do A2?.

Any advice or anyones experience with dropping out would be much appreciated x
P.S Working part time there isnt an option as only full time postitions are available.

Can't you just find another college/sixth form to go to?? Without a degree, you won't get very far.

yeah because all them people in the country without a degree are usless.... more usless then a person with a Hospitality degree?

Where did I say useless? I'm just saying that it will be a lot harder to get promoted to better and higher paying positions.

i say quit and get the job. I quit my summer temp job to go to uni. Worst decision of my life ever. if you don't like college why bother carrying on. If it as uni and you'd already paid 3145 then i could understand it. but it's your life.

Don't let a bad experience ruin your future. If you decide later on that you want to go to uni and get a degree, do you realise how much more expensive that will be?

What's wrong with Uni?

I would say keep with the AS levels, but I'm biased because I hate my part-time job and loved my AS year. Working in a clothes shop is OK as a little job, but it ain't no career.

education takes you futher coz if you want a decent job with good pay then you should go to uni.
If you really hate the college then drop out and re-enroll next september at a new school which has better teaching.
Its your choice

I'd just say do what you want, If it's something that you're going to enjoy take it. I know that college seems hard, and all my teachers turn up and teach, i still feel like dropping out. Just go for it if you want to, Tell your mum, dont ask her.

If you really hate your sixth form college so much, why don't you leave, take a 'gap year' so to speak, take up the job, spend a year earning money/life experience whilst applying to some other sixth form colleges for entry in Sep 2009
If after a year working at the clothes shop you decide you don't like it, then you have the option of returning back to a new college (not the crap one)
If you love it, then good for you
Also, a degree would probably help you in the long run if you want to become promoted to managers position etc but you could still do NVQs in retail and things like that where you are trained on the job and maybe only go into a college for one evening a week- so maybe that is something worth looking into if you have decided academia is not for you!!

Hope it all works well x

I think if you want to work full time, and feel you'd benefit from it more, then go for it.

Perhaps look into whether they can offer you any training, for example there are more vocational courses out there designed for the retail sector.

Don't quit college if you feel you'd like to go to university as a mature student though, I've heard it's not as easy to get back to do your A levels.

I would say, if you hated your college, then drop out and carry on with your job. You can always go to college, in the following September or in a few years time.

Tosh, absolute tosh.

Richard Branson had no GCSE's, no A-Levels and no degrees. Look at where he is. Each individual is their own person and you cannot say that without a degree you won't get anywhere. Granted if you drop out to work full time in Next or Boots or something then you wont get too far, but now is about the time to be sending off your applications for apprenticships for September. If you get one, then you stand a great chance of getting just as far as someone with a degree.

I'm doing the same thing after I finish my A2's this year, except it's slightly different as I'm applying for a scholorship to do Project Management at BAE Systems, the Military Air Solutions Company. Basically, they pay for you to do Uni 2 days a week to get a degree for 5 years and work for 3 days, starting salary of £17k up to £23k by the end of the 5 years and then it shoots up to £45k once you are fully qualified within the company.

It's not garunteed but you do need to hunt around - there are brilliant little schemes out there that will suit you perfectly. Even sites like JTL maybe worth a look, and make sure you get a Genesys test done before you leave!

I'd drop out now, get the job, work until september to see if you REALLY like working that much, and if not, enroll for next year (or the year after that if you want) at a different college.

I say this because I think once you work full-time, you will realize how much you like school, and may decide to go back, and then you will be much more motivated than you are now, which will probably mean you will do much better for your AS/A2 grades than right now.

I'd say quit now and take the job! That is exactly what I did (albeit after just 1 week at college!) It really gave me a chance to think about what I wanted to do with my life, and in the end I decided to go back (to a different college) the following year, and so now I'm in my second year of college and will be going to uni in September. There's no point in staying if you are not even going to carry on the second year anyway.
