You will be invited to offer holder visit days at each Uni at some point in the spring term. These are an excellent opportunity to take a more critical look at each Uni, listen to more detailed course presentations, talk to current students about life at that Uni, and then do some careful and calm thinking about which course and which Uni will suit you best. Remember, you do not have to enter this choice on UCAS until May - and there is no advantage in doing this any earlier.

Hi there @rattlearattle ,

Congratulations on your offers! That is a huge achievement, and I know it is a very difficult decision picking which universities to apply to, and I would agree with what the person above said as the biggest factor in your choice should be how you feel about each one, ideally having visited them.

You should research each course and see if one fits more with the specific topics you want to be able to cover, or how you would prefer to be assessed, for example.

In terms of rankings, thecompleteuniversityguide ranks Southampton's Mechatronics course at No.5 in the UK, with Bristol UWE at No.16. However, whilst this is useful information, rankings and public perception is not all there is to a university course, and its alignment with your areas of interest, hobbies, preferred location, etc. is much more relevant information when it comes to making a decision.

I hope that this helps and that you get into the university of your choice! Of course, should that be Southampton, we look forward to seeing you in September! 😉

Best of luck,

Hello Rattle!

Congrats on your offers from those three really great Engineering unis.

As others have said, these unis will all be sending out invitations to offer holder visit days if they have not done already scheduled in the coming months which are a great way to learn more about that uni's specific course. If you are able, I'd defo recommend going, and if you can please do talk to some current students (they will be helping out at these events) - they are a great source of real, honest opinions of life at that uni.

Try not to think too much about rankings as in your case all of those unis are very high-performing. Its far more important that you choose somewhere A) where the course sounds most interesting for you, B) has a campus and city you like and think you'd be happy at, and C) has the opportunities you are after such as a placement or year in industry.

Hoping this helps - best of luck with everything in the coming months and I'm sure that whichever of those you end up choosing you'll have a really good academic experience 🙂

Thanks everyone for your feedback, reviewing course in detail and attending offer holders day seem like the best thing to do

Attend offer-holder days, visit the cities, visit the campuses and meet the people teaching it and existing students.

Only you can really decide which priorities you have:

Location (close to home vs not bothered)

By the sea or not

Already know people there

Attending with friends from school (or not as the case may be)

Cost of living (probably not that dissimilar in all three locations you mention as they are in the South and desirable)

City life

Transportation links, parking, etc

Intention to remain in the area post-graduation or complete follow up academic qualifications

course structure, layout or professional body accreditation

Industry links- for an engineer I'd have said this was pretty high on the list of priorities

Year in industry vs not

Other stuff

And so on.

Visit all three places, get the vibe of the institution, the campus and the city. What do your friends, parents etc think?

Yes indeed, I'll be attending the offer holders day and then talking to students etc
