Struggling To Choose My Firm for Digital Media (UoM, MMU or University Of Salford)

I have applied to university and received offers from all of my choices. I'm currently studying an Access to HE Diploma after being out of education for about 2 years and I really don’t want to make the wrong choice this time. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to choose between my offers. By this I mean what I should consider when deciding on my firm choice, and what I should be researching to help me make a final decision. I'd also really appreciate it if anyone who has studied the courses below, or has any information about the courses or universities, could share their experiences with me:

University of Manchester: Digital Media, Culture and Society
Manchester Metropolitan University: Digital Media and Communications
University of Salford: Digital Video Production and Marketing

I apologise if my question is really silly, but I have no one else I can ask, so I wanted to try asking for some help here.

Thank you

Hey @prawnsushi ,

Absolutely not a silly question! Its a perfectly normal thing to not know what to consider when choosing between universities, its a really big decision to make.

My biggest recommendation would be to visit your choices if you haven't already. I'd say one of the largest factors in feeling like you've made the right choice in university is actually feeling at home there, and being happy. It sounds really simple, but a lot of people put more emphasis on league tables and stats rather than their own comfort and happiness, which makes a huge difference in how much you engage with the course, how hard you work and generally just the enjoyment of your three years! You'll get more out of a degree that suits you and makes you happy, so its a big consideration! You mention having an offer for us (wooo!) - we'll be holding a series of Offer Holder Days over the next few months which we'll be contacting offer holders about soon, which can give you the chance to visit and actually see how you feel in a course session and on our MediaCity campus!

From a more practical sense, consider the modules and teaching styles of the course. Does the way they teach suit how you like to learn? Are you a more practical person, and enjoy learning in a more hands on way? Its worth looking through University course pages to see what and how they teach to see if it aligns with your interests, and what you might want to get out of the course. If you know you're interested in working in X field, does the degree teach you the skills to pursue jobs in that area? Do they have connections that might give you a head start? How are the facilities for digital media subjects? I know that's a lot of points to consider, but they're all worth looking into, I promise! With us, you'd be based at MediaCity for your course, so right in the heart of Northern media production. Our facilities here are designed specifically for media students alone, so you'll have access to big studio spaces, filming equipment, editing suites, and be working alongside other students in TV & Radio, Film Production, Animation etc, which makes for a really creative environment.

Seeing as your offers are all from around Manchester, you might already be familiar with being around the city, but if not definitely check out the surrounding areas to where you're going and the kind of student lifestyle you might have. I'll be very honest and say the student lifestyle does tend to revolve around Manchester City Centre no matter what university you're at, but consider the different types of accommodation or commuting routes to each of us, depending on if you're moving out or staying at home whilst studying. Having a nightmare of a commute or an accommodation that stretches your budget uncomfortably can have a huge effect on your experience, so worth considering!

If you have any queries I'm more than happy to help - we do have ambassadors on the site too, so if you have any student experience questions please don't hesitate to ask, as I'm sure they'll be more than happy to jump in!

All the best with your decision making!

Don’t firm yet, the deadline isn’t till June 3rd. Visit and mull this over, there is no rush. Once you have decided, sleep on it before pressing the button! Good luck

Thank you for the detailed response! I’ll keep all of this in mind when choosing my firm, and I’ll make sure to book an offer‑holder day to get a better sense of the atmosphere and the course!

Thank you so much for the advice!! I’d been working under the impression that I needed to decide as early as possible, so I’ve been researching non‑stop to try and have everything sorted by the end of February but knowing the actual deadline is 3rd June takes a lot of pressure off so thank you!

Hi @prawnsushi!

I just wanted to jump in too! First of all, congrats on your offer! 😊

Everything that's been said in this thread already is brilliant advice, so I won't repeat anything too much. I just wanted to let you know about some ways you can find out more about each university!

As Becky from Salford has already mentioned, universities will have open days and visit days coming up in the next few months to give you a chance to sample the courses in more detail, speak with lecturers, and visit the campuses. At Man Met, our visit days will take place at the end of February, as well as in March and April. We will send offer holders an invite to book onto these events, so keep an eye on your emails for that! Since you've received all of your offers, you'll have until 6th May to reply to them with your decisions, so you have plenty of time!

If you're looking to get more of an insight into student life, and how people feel about their courses, I would definitely recommend you chat with a Student Ambassador through our the Unibuddy platform! You can get chatting right away by visiting https://www.mmu.ac.uk/chat-with-us-unibuddy. We'll also be launching our Community for firm offer holders in the next few months, which will allow you to connect with fellow applicants and find people on your course, with similar hobbies, etc. I would also highly recommend you do the same for the other universities you have offers for!

I hope this helps, and best of luck wherever you choose to go in September!

Louie
