S6 Choies!

Hi, I’m currently in S5 and I’m choosing my S6 subjects next week.

I really have no idea what I want to do when I leave school, so for my highers this year I’ve just picked things I generally enjoy/im good at.

For S6 I’m really stuck on whether to do 3 Advanced highers which would be:
1. Advanced Higher Art
2. Advanced Higher Modern Studies
3. Advanced Higher Graphics

Or a mix of 4 highers/advanced highers which would be:
1. Advanced Higher Art
2. Higher Photography
3. Advanced Higher Modern Studies
4. ???

Can anyone give me advice on whether it’s best to do 3 or 4 subjects next year, and what highers/advanced highers out of these are best?

Also, if anyone has any highers they think I would be capable of crashing based on my current subjects, please let me know!

Thank u

If you think that you can handle the work load I’ve heard many people enjoy advanced higher art due to how much artwork you do for your portfolio,
if you are unsure what you want to do I would recommend taking higher English if you haven’t already and making sure you have passed Nat 5 maths/apps as many unis will require these and not having them will narrow down your options, I was in the same boat however and didn’t take higher English but I still got offers without that requirement so it isn’t the end of the world it will just give you more to choose from.
Im currently sitting higher photography and as long as your teachers are supportive then I would say it will be easy to succeed as long as you are choosing a realistic theme.
I can’t speak for the other advanced highers but most seem to be essay based so if you think you would struggle with that then you may be better getting more highers but if you already have good higher subjects or just enjoy the subjects I don’t think it’s worth worrying about that part.
It is your S6 so if you don’t want to be bothered with a lot of work then you may be better doing less adv and more highers!

Heya! (:

snap!! - also wasnt too sure what i wanted exactly to do at uni when i was in s6 lol😊 - as others were mentioning a broad mix and your higher english + n5 maths is fab for when your unsure, just generally gives you some more options for universities (:

for my S6 I crashed highers in physics, psycology & then picked up higher art after dropping it in 4th year + did my adv chemistry - i had already did 5 highers but was pretty unsure exactly what i wanted to go into and i found that time trying some different subjects was great for giving me some more options, but also doing my chemistry let me see if i'd enjoy it to a higher level!

unsure your exact current subjects that you've been doing for highers, but i found crashing psychology not to be too bad! - had done a lot of previous essays with my higher english & modern studies, the essays werent the exact same format, but i found the skills from doing these under exam conditions pretty transferable to the subject and same with when learning the topics, quite similar to modern studies in the case study aspect + examples within your essays😊 - i would expect it to be pretty similar too for other higher social subjects

i would see about having a look on the sqa website at the course specs for each of the subjects your considering, they will have a description and explain a bit more whats involved and what you would be learning to see if its something you'd be interested in learning more about - also would reccomend chatting to the teachers who teach it as they have likely had people crash it before and can maybe give a bit more insight into how you'll find it and also if they have any support avaible to help (:

hope this helps a bit, best of luck with deciding!!
