Biomedical engineering choice

Hey guys!
I got an offer from both uni of Sheffield and Loughborough but I’m stuck which one to choose for my firm
Could anyone please give me some info or advice on both uni’s!

Hi, first of all congratulations!
so as someone who went to Sheffield I am going to be biased and say choose Sheffield. But obviously there's lot of things to consider. Sheffield is a Russell group UNI and it's also based in a good location with transport links and everything within walkable distance. So you get the perks of a city but get the sense of community. I really enjoyed my time there, there is lot to do and a huge amount of students societies. In terms of teaching, I found teaching accessible with most live lecture recorded so you can watch again and some online lectures. The lecturers were also really helpful and you get support from the school. I studied biomedical science so I know our department definitely overlap in some aspects. But yes if the there any other information you need to make your decision let me know and I'll answer them if I can.

Hi @pphy.2021_!

Huge congratulations on receiving those offers- you must be elated!

Have you been to an open day here yet? I would definitely recommend visiting the universities you are choosing between if you haven't already. You will spend 3-5 years living at your chosen Uni location (this is +- placement years/ masters/ foundation years)- so it's worth visiting to see which campus and vibe feels most homely and right for you! Open days also allow you the opportunity to check out the Biomed Engineering department and facilities, as well as chat to current students about their experience of the course.

There's so much to do in Sheffield and it's a super friendly, diverse city. I've lived in Sheffield for over 5 years now as part of my course and I intend to stay here afterwards- my Uni experience and the city itself have simply been amazing so far! We have hundreds of societies and sports clubs for you to get involved in, which are a great way to meet new people and try a new (or old) hobby! You can look at the various societies and sports clubs on offer here.

You can see on our website that the Biomed Engineering course here is held in high esteem, ranked number one in the National Student Survey for 'Teaching on the course' and 'Learning opportunities' in the subject of bioengineering, medical and biomedical engineering. I know a couple of engineers here (unfortunately not Biomed engineers) that say the facilities for Biomed are amazing, with many of them based in The Diamond building. You can read more about the course here.

If you had specific questions about the course, you could ask a current Biomedical Engineering student about their experience of the course via our online chat service here.

I hope this helps! Is there anything in particular that you were wondering about the course / the Uni/ the city itself? 😊

I am also a Sheff student and also biased. I will no doubt be staying in Sheffield after my degree because I love it so much.

One of my best friends goes to Loughborough and while she loves her degree, she visits all the time and wishes that she could pick up her degree and bring it to Sheff. Loughborough is a very small town and while the campus is awesome, it can feel a little claustrophobic and cramped at times. Sheffield is still a relatively small city, enough that you feel safe and you can get around relatively easily, but big enough that there is soo much to do and definitely big enough that you can see yourself staying here for work after your degree.
I do molecular biology which I have found a very difficult science so I understand that for you as well the course is going to be the biggest factor. I'd say go where you think the course is going to be most enjoyable. Don't bother looking at league tables because 1. things change year to year, and 2. all big unis (Russell group or not) are accredited and the courses will be of a very high quality, ultimately with minute differences between them overall. Look at modules and the core values of the course (Research? Concepts?) and the flexibility of modules, the overall basis of the education (how broad is your first year? Broad is great for building a career) and THEN look at the city. But ultimately, you will be there for a long time. Again im biased. But pick sheff... !! I am currenly on placement year and I am ITCHING to get back to Sheff and my beautiful peak district !! ❤️
