Uni Exam University

I am currently studying a uni undergraduate psychology degree and I am in my first year and have two exams this year. Does anyone have any good revision tips for this level of exams?

Thank you ☺️
Hi @charlotte2023!
Although I don't study psychology instead marine biology, I do have friends who do this course and am currently experiencing exams. I would say the first step is going through your lecture notes and ensure they have all been completed as this lets go properly go through all the content. Then I would summarise each of the notes so the key details are highlighted, during this if there is any topics you don't understand then do further reading to gain a different explanation. Some people then really prefer making flashcards to memorise the info or doing mindmaps to see what they know and to link different topics together. Most importantly is going through any practice questions you have been provided as it highlights your weak areas, and may give you an idea on the test format.
Looking after yourself by sleeping, having meals and rest is crucial as you don't want to overwhelm yourself or burn out.

Good luck for your exam, I hope this helped and if you have any other questions please let me know.

Hi,

While I don’t study psychology, I’d recommend making a flexible timetable to review all your lecture material and creating active recall resources such as flashcards or mind maps to help with learning and understanding. If you have any questions or find something difficult you can’t answer yourself, don’t hesitate to contact your peers or tutors they can really help clarify things. Changing up your study environment and taking regular breaks can also improve focus and prevent burnout.

Hope this helps,

Hi! @charlotte2023! 🙂
Others have given you excellent advice, here are some additions I have:

Use brain dumps as an active recall method to test what you already know and don't

When it gets closer to the exams, make a 'cheat sheet'. This is just a piece of paper with the mistakes that you make or any information you consistently forget/get wrong. This means everything is one place, plus it's really helpful to go over before your exams to remind yourself of the information if it does end up coming on the exam.

Use your coursework feedback! This is crucial as it allows you to improve on your work. This is especially relevant if your coursework is similar to the exam (e.g. if both are essays)

Use past papers if your university provides them.

Make sure you take care of yourself!! Keep doing the things you enjoy, make sure you include some down time so you don't burn out, and make sure you're eating well and sleeping enough!!

I hope this helps! Good luck with your exams!! 🙂

Hello,

A few revision methods that helped me the most for my exams:
-Active recalling
-Dividing the revision work per day
-Using flashcards
-Generate quizzes to quiz yourself (e.g., Quizlet)

Hi there 😊,

Although I don't do psychology personally, I do study pharmacy which is quite content heavy so I can give a few tips on how I study for my exams.

I enjoy learning throughout the year so the content doesn't build up towards the end - so I would recommend flashcards/anki to do this. You can always start slow and build this up as you head towards exam season.

With your exams, know what kind of questions they ask like mcq's, short answer questions, case studies, etc. It can be useful to make practice questions so you can know what you're expecting. Also see if your university does past papers that you can look and revise from - this is quite useful when you're first starting to revise.

If you like to write up your notes, maybe write a summary of each lecture or similar content so you're able to in future find areas that you're struggling with and then you can spend more time focused on that topic.

If your exams are more essay based, practice with questions - see if you can bullet point or if not practice so you won't waffle too much and you are answering the questions.

Make sure to take breaks and although exam season can be quite stressful and overwhelming, find time to do things that you like - sports, coffee with friends, walks, hobbies etc!

I hope this helps and best of luck for your exams!

Hi!

I also don't study this course but I do have some general revision tips that you might find helpful:

The first thing I would say is try and find the revision method that works for you. I am a visual learner so I like to make mind maps and revision cards really help me, however one of my friends learns best from listening so she uses a software to turn her notes into a podcast that she can listen to. So find the best way for you and this will help you to use your revision time well.

Go through all of your notes and make sure the key things are written down/highlighted so you can see which bits are the most important. It is good to try and revise everything but at least this way you have all of the key bits done in case you end up running out of time.

I always find asking my housemates to test me really helps me, so I will give them my flashcards and let them test me!

Asking your tutor and peers if you are struggling is important too and they will be able to help you and give you some revision tips too, or explain anything you don't understand.

Just a general tip for managing time is to make a schedule. This always helps me to feel a lot less stressed and more in control of my work. I like to make one each week where I can see which days I have uni, when I have work and when I have time to revise so I have specific set hours where I know I don't have to do anything except revise which keeps me focused.

Another general tip is to make sure you have plenty of breaks. This always helps me, whether it is just going for a walk, or going for a coffee I like to know I have breaks coming up so I can stay focused in the time that I do need to revise.

I hope some of this helps, and good luck for your exams!
