Retaking A-levels

Hello guys,

I’m in my gap year after finishing my A-levels and got an A in English lit and a B in History, but unfortunately failed maths so I’m obligated to retake that. However a B isn’t terrible and I’m aiming atleast towards an A in Maths. I’m wondering if it’s worth it to spend the cash (quite a lot) on the History retake as I’m interested in IR which isn’t super competitive and really want to get into KCL if there’s a chance through clearing (didn’t apply in UCAS bc of requirements). Would an AAB be good enough to get in?

Thank you

KCL will not need to be in Clearing to fill an IR/Politics course or need to be accepting anyone who is apparently well below their minimum entry requirements. You also need to ask yourself why you are apparently over-focussed on just one Uni.

If you have ABB grades - I'm not sure what you mean by 'failed' Maths - there are plenty of Universities that may still be accepting applications or may be in Clearing for Politics/IR, and these will probably be far more realistic options for you than KCL.

Thanks but I don’t think I’m ‘well below’ the grade requirements as it’s literally one grade below as they expect an AAA and offer Uni’s who go through clearing offer lower grade boundaries compared to normal applicationsanyways on the day. And ‘failing’ means getting below a D grade what else would it mean let’s use our brains here cmon.
But thanks for your input!!!

You cannot have both a U grade and be only just below the entry requirements.

And top Unis do not routinely lower their entry requirements for Clearing.

I’ve seen KCL repeatedly lower their grade boundaries slightly for clearing compared to their offers, and doesn’t clearing rely on your new grades which will likely be AAB, that’s what I was asking.

Hey, I had a look and it doesn't look like IR frequently pops up in clearing at KCL over the past few years as it is quite a popular course. First, I say check if you are eligible for kcl contectual offers and if you are then there would be no point in spending the extra money for the hsitory retake, and you could even apply through ucas extra maybe? And about spending the extra money, just be aware of the risk that your course may not even be in clearing at kcl this year, and then you would have spent the money for nothing (unless you have other motivating factors for wanting to retake). But still, I guess there's still no harm in calling up kcl when clearing opens to see if they will take you with the grades you'll achieve. But as a backup, definitely have other universities you can look to, in case it doesn't go well with kcl.
Wishing you all the best with your studies and with finding a university!!

Thank you for your kind and understanding reply. I’ll look into the UCAS extra option, thanks again!
