Is anyone studying for a Master’s in Architecture at the University of Bath?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Part 1 graduate currently working in practice. I have about 10 months of experience now, and while my boss is happy with my work and wants me to stay, I’m feeling a bit "stuck" in residential projects. I’m ready to discover more of what architecture can be!

I’m looking at applying for my Part 2 at the University of Bath as my second choice after UCL. I graduated with a 2:1 and have a few questions for current or past MArch students:

The Placement (Year 1): I saw the tuition fee is halved for the first year because of the placement. My big question is: do we get paid by the firm during this placement, or is it unpaid?

Teaching Style: Is the course more "artsy" and theoretical, or is it quite practical and technical?

The Atmosphere: How are the tutors? Are they supportive and approachable?

Overall Vibe: I’ve had a long think about whether to stay in architecture. I might not be the "best" yet, but I truly love it—it gives me joy and meaning. Is Bath a good environment for someone who wants to rediscover their passion for the craft?

Would love to hear from anyone currently at Bath.

Thank youu

I don’t do architecture but from what I heard at undergrad level UCL is far more creative with Bath being much more mathematical

Hi there!

Great to hear you're thinking of Bath as one of your options to carry on your Architecture training. Whilst I don't do Architecture myself I've been here for awhile both as a former student and staff so I can give you my overall impressions of Bath as a uni/city.

Pros - excellent placement scheme and industry-focus, smallish campus feels cosy and village-like, the city is very safe and with loads to do for its small size, Bath's well transport connected by bus and train to places like Bristol, Wells and London, and the uni is really high-performing for student satisfaction and graduate outcomes.

Cons - small city which may feel too small for people coming from larger places, the campus is up a hill so a bus is required to reach it, Bath can be a little expensive to live in (although you'll find that in many cities in the South of England at the moment), and there is limited city parking!

To find out a bit more about the uni, why don't you hop onto our postgrad virtual open day on 4th Feb 2026? It'll give you the chance to meet a few current students and academics and take a look at the campus in more detail.

I would take a look at a few MArch courses you like the look of and plan to read a bit more into their specific contents, and possibly going to visit a few places if you are able to see whether you like the unis themselves. It helped me also to have a pros and cons list for each course/uni I was interested in. At the end of the day its about choosing the option which feels right for you and your needs.

Hopefully this helps a little bit - best of luck 🙂
