Higher english prelim

Hello, I have got my higher English prelim this Thursday and looking at some past papers, I feel really lost (mainly for the essay).

I am not really sure how to structure my essay, for example, my teacher says to use 2 quotes per paragraph but I’ve asked others and they say just 1 is okay.

For anyone who has done their prelim (specifically the essay) or higher English in the past any tips would be very helpful.

P.s I am doing Maryland (a play) so if anyone’s ever done that then some help would be very much appreciated.

My honest advice is to use the perspective of planning your paragraphs based on analysis points, as opposed to how many quotes you're looking to fit into one paragraph. My essay was on a poem for higher, but the logic would still apply; I had certain points I wanted to make to answer the question(s) I was preparing for, so I'd group together quotes which would help me to do this, so sometimes my paragraphs would only have 1 quote, but some had up to 3. I think it also depends how much analysis you're planning to put into each quote - if you have some favourite quotes which you have a lot to say about, it may not be necessary to include another quote to prove your point, if you can do so from the main quote/ would be repeating yourself. Quality comes over quantity with the essays.

If that still doesn't help, I'd aim to have two quotes per paragraph, so long as they are effective in being paired together in answering your essay question (my essays commonly had 5-6 quotes total, the first two paragraphs having 2-3 quotes and the last often having only 1 due to time constraints).

Let me know if this helps/if you want me to re-explain
