Medicine applicant.

I got 99988887766 (further maths, biology, physics, chemistry, maths, history, computer science, english literature, french, english language, pre.

Let's say I predicted triple A*S and a 2300+ UCAT score band one, is it possible to secure an interview at Kings and Imperial - they dont seem very GCSE heavy.

Also, will my 6 in English language be a big disadvantage? Are there any good Russell Unis which wont care about that because I got all 9s and 8s in the sciences and maths?

Hi @vee2324

Have you considered Hull York Medical School (HYMS)? The entry requirements are as follows:

AAA at A level (including Biology and Chemistry)

6 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (including grade 6 for English Language and grade 6 for Maths)

UCAT: SJT Band 1, 2 or 3

With your achieved GCSE grades, and if you were on track to achieve A*A*A* at A level, you'd comfortably meet those entry requirements for HYMS' MB BS Medicine course. I'm not too sure on the UCAT conversions, but you could reach out to the HYMS Admissions Team via email ([email protected]) or phone (+441904 321690) for more information. Perhaps it's somewhere for you to consider!

Best of luck in your application!
Hannah 😀

Most unis need a 6 in English language anyways so I’d say your good. I got an offer from Bristol and Plymouth and I got a 5 in English language. As for kings and imperial I’m not sure but because your other GCSEs are really strong I think you have a good chance. Before applying drop them an email with your gcse grades, predicted a level grades and your Ucat score, they can tell you whether you meet their entry requirements or not. Can always check their websites too!

Well done for getting those amazing gcse grades!! Good luck with your medicine journey, I’m sure you’ll be amazing. 😄

Omg my GCSEs were so unserious stop, I got a mix of 7,6,5 but lol I still got where I wanted to be.

The relevant ones: Maths 7, English lang 5, English lit 7, chem + bio i got 6

For my A levels I did maths chem bio and I got As in all of them

Bristol is Ucat heavy so aim for 2300 plus, if you do a summer school you’ll be able to get an interview even if your Ucat is lower than the cut off

Did any of them help you stand out as an applicant or was there something in your PS they rlly liked.

Your welcome 🙏🏽 I’m glad I could help

I am contextual cause I live in Bristol, I was adamant to get in so I did a summer school aswell 😭 I also grew up as a young carer. Bristol don’t read personal statements sadly

For work experience I did volunteering on hospital wards, I really recommend this do it for at least 3 months cause it shows commitment and your able to build relationships that way.

I also did a 3 day NHS placement at the same hospital where I shadowed 6 different Drs in different fields. This was probably my selling point, I was lucky enough to watch the first 4 hours of a brain surgery. My college careers team found this placement and I signed up to it, deffo check the nhs websites for work experience and this was only aimed at local year 12 students. I remember having to write a mini statement to get onto this placement as it was really competitive.

So deffo check out volunteering on nhs website id start that asap cause it’ll take a while to get through the process you need a dbs check and stuff. And the nhs placements should be advertised soon so keep checking on those websites.

If you had any more questions please ask!! I’ll have a look for the website too

Thank you so much, you are very kind. I’m also going to start volunteering at the hospital for a year so hopefully that shows commitment. I’ve also been selected to do the work experience next week! I hope I get to see something as exciting as you did!! Again you have been very helpful, I hope you enjoy your course at uni!
