Hasan BSc (Hons) Computer Science

For Hasan, studying our BSc (Hons) Computer Science programme has been a journey of growth, leadership and innovation. He's turned what started as a childhood interest into a clear path towards a future in artificial intelligence and software development.

This is his story:

" I’ve always loved computer science. It just clicked for me"

A place I could thrive
When I learned Python at GCSE level it immediately clicked for me. "During my A levels, I started experimenting with small projects and achieved an A* in Computer Science. This gave me a strong foundation for university. "When I visited Bradford on an Open Day everyone was so welcoming, and the facilities really stood out.

It felt like an environment where I could thrive academically and personally. "One of the highlights of my first year was our programming coursework. We had to build a game in Java, which was completely new to me. "I went beyond the brief by adding a start menu and difficulty levels. The extra problem-solving made the project even more rewarding."

Extra curricular activities and projects
"My extra-curricular commitments are more than just pastimes." "Outside of my degree, I’ve always enjoyed working on my own projects. "Before university I started a couple of YouTube channels which I continue to run; one for gaming content and one where I upload Python tutorials. "I’ve also developed personal programming projects, ranging from a Football Tic-Tac-Toe game to a Truth Table generator, and even an Android game called Flying Football. "At the start of 2025,

I set myself a personal challenge: the AI Apps Challenge 2025. This involves building an AI-powered app every month. So far, I’ve developed tools like a document summariser, an AI testing agent, a cover letter writer, and more. I create showcase videos on YouTube to share what I’ve learned and hopefully inspire others."

Internships and industry experience
"Towards the end of my first year, I applied for internships through the University’s Summer Experience programme." "I would absolutely recommend any first and second-year students apply for internships and make the most of Bradford's careers service. "One of their careers advisors recommended an AI research internship with the Bradford Children and Families Trust. I applied and got the role. "I spent ten weeks researching how AI could be implemented across the Trust.

"I developed AI-enabled solutions, met with professionals from across the organisation, and produced a research report which outlined potential use cases and challenges. "It was my first experience of seeing how AI could make a real difference in workplaces. I even won an award with my manager for my work at the University’s awards evening."

Education built for employability
"After the internship, I was offered a part-time role during my second year." "I worked around ten hours a week focusing on IT automation and AI-driven document extraction to support social care teams. "I also completed another internship with a local sportswear start-up, building web applications for their business."

These roles gave me technical experience and helped me build confidence, communication skills and professional insight. I couldn’t have learnt this from lectures alone.

Connection, support and confidence
"Extracurricular activities in teaching and leadership have developed my confidence." "Along with my placement and part-time roles, I also work as a lab demonstrator. I help first and second-year students with two course modules:

Technical and Professional Skills, and Internet Technologies. Teaching has strengthened my own knowledge while supporting others. "As well, I’m currently the president of PiSoc, the computer science society at Bradford. We host weekly study sessions and social events to help students connect and support one another. "Being part of this community has been one of my favourite parts of university life."

How I stay organised
"I plan my days, but I try to stay flexible because things don’t always go to plan." "Balancing lectures, work, personal projects such as my YouTube channels, and society commitments has taught me how to prioritise and stay consistent. My advice to other students is to start your own projects and stay curious. "You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one."

Looking ahead
"I want to build a career in software and AI development." "Right now, I’m applying for graduate roles in software and AI development. In the future, I’d like to work for a few years and then return to university part-time to study a Master’s in Applied Artificial Intelligence. "Long-term, I’d love to work abroad on global AI projects.

"The careers team and academic staff have played a big part in my journey. From helping me apply for internships to guiding my long-term career plans, their support has been invaluable."
