Placement Year

Hi, I’m thinking of doing a placement year after Year 2. I’m currently in Year 1 and was just wondering if anyone on a creative computing course has done a placement year. If you did, what kind of placement was it? Also, how did you figure out what you wanted your placement year to be in?

What 'sort' of placement you do depends entirely on your Uni and their expectations/systems for organising this. Talk to your Unis placements team and/or Year 3 students on the same course.

I believe doing a placement year in creative computing can be really valuable. I would think it could lead you into usually take placements in areas like:

Software development/programming

Data analysis/data science

digital innovation roles

What does this statement actually mean, and do you actually study Creative Computing and therefore have any personal experience of related placements?

Hi,

I hope you are well! I know it's not directly related to your question but the website higherin is really good for finding placements. I am currently in my second year at LJMU and trying to find a placement. I have been able to apply for lots of different placements and get interviews from using the website.

You can filter through location, types of placement and length of placement and it will show you are the options. I was recommended the app by a lecturer also. Here is the link to the website, https://higherin.com. I hope you are able to benefit from it like it have. Let me know if you have any questions, I am more than happy to help!

Thanks, Matt 😊

Hi there!

This is more general advice but if you are struggling with finding placements, one place I would really recommend going to is your universities employability/careers team as they will help you out with thinking of what you could do your placement in, what opportunities there may be and how to write your CV/applications to make them the best that they can be.

You could also try asking your tutors for help too as they will know where students have gone in previous years which should help you think of some options that you could choose to pursue. Your module leader will also know some of these things so you could ask them too.

Looking on websites like Milkround, Gradcracker, Prospects were helpful for me when I looked at doing a placement year so have a look on things like this too. Often universities will have a website where students can look at job opportunities too so see if you can access something similar.

Another thing I would suggest is to make use of any opportunities to speak about placements or go to an event where they are discussing placements as there will be some for you to go to which could really help you narrow down what you might want to do.

I hope some of this helps!

Hi there,
Creative computing sounds like an amazing course to be on! I did a placement year at my University and thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on my search here's a couple different roles that might suit your needs.
Though I'm on just regular Computer Science, I did a placement year and my main deciding factor was employability as you will have more experience than other students before even graduating, sometimes even a graduate offer secured. I also wanted time to think about my final year project! Before you start your placement search journey....

Always confirm first with your course leaders what their placement requirements are such as:
-Are you able to do one if you didn't choose it from the get-go (some have this policy, luckily at Staffs we didn't, phew, meant that I could swap into one whenever I got a role.)
-Is there a fee involved (some Universities will charge you a tuition fee for the placement year, usually up to £2000, though you are also eligible for SFE loans to cover tuition and maintenance, lowered amount compared to regular year.)
-What placements are you allowed to do? Can you do one in a related field, does it need to be a certain title (discretionary to the Uni usually), does it need to achieve certain things, will you have assessments/assignments to complete? Make sure you get this written and documented for proof! Staffs was quite happy with letting students explore different fields as long as the placement supported overall understanding in your degree or built your skills. Some chose to build their own business, some got a role relating to Systems Engineering, others Aerospace and similar! Have this clarified early to make your search so much easier and stress-free. My role was in retail and rotational, covering info sec, project management, service operations and IT. You could argue that not all my rotations were highly "comp sci related!"
-What length must it cover? Most placements are only considered a placements by Careers teams if they are over a predefined number of working hours per week and weeks in total. This can be 6+ for some and go up to a maximum of 18 months even! Most placements tend to be around 12 months long to be in line with the Uni calendars.

Once you have that information do check out the following suggested roles below to see if any meet your requirements. Search them up to see past examples and descriptors. With creative computing you can blend so many fun things together, it really depends on your knowledge, where your passions lie, skillset and willingness to learn! Feel free to cross off any here that don't suit your interests. Do look into any titles that sound fun. You can often find these on Bright Network, TargetJobs and Gradcracker. Please be aware that role descriptors per company can vary greatly! Try not to discount a role just because of 1 job advert due to this, research is key.

Suggested Searches (there are many more out there!)

Software Developer, Web Developer, Front-End Developer, Application Developer, E-commerce

Games Programmer/Developer, Narrative Design, Level Design, Interactive Developer, User Experience in Games, Games Designer (list just goes on in games!)

3D Modelling, 3D Artist, CAD Engineer

Project Manager, Product Manager

Technologist, Technology Developer, Digital Experience Developer

Immersive Media Developer, XR Developer, AR Developer

UX UX Designer, UI Designer, Interaction Design, Digital Product Design, UX Research Assistant

Digital Content Developer/Digital Media Developer

Data Visualisation, Data Science, AI Engineer, Data Assistant, Data Management, Machine Learning

Digital Producer Assistant, Technical Assistant, Studio Technology Assistant, Production Technology

Technology Consulting

Education / Outreach, Teaching Assistant

A little out of bounds but you could still consider with University permission...

Network Engineer

Cyber Security Analyst

Information Security Specialist

Backend Developer

Risk

Technology Consulting

Systems Engineer

Business Intelligence

Quality Assurance

Software Test Engineer

IT / Technical Support

If anyone has any other to suggest feel free to add them on! I likely missed so many as these are off the top of my head.

Some quick notes: placements usually start in around Summer time (may onwards), applications for placement open in batches with the first major ones opening in ~September, then fluctuating in October/Nov and finally a last major wave in end of Jan for companies who have hiring freezes. The early bird is more likely to catch the worm from my personal experience! Hope isn't lost for later applications though, it just becomes harder due to the smaller pool of roles and high level of applicants. I recommend having a CV and portfolio ready to show your careers team before September and that you start researching now the titles suggested, companies that offered them in the past, where they are located and when they open up for 2026. There's so much to say about placements that I just can't fit in this single reply! Feel free to ask any clarifying questions and I'll help the best I can.

Wishing you all the best (Aura, Uni of Staffs Student Rep, Computer Science)

Hi there,

I am a Cyber Security student at De Montfort University, and I did my placement at Jaguar Land Rover as a Software Undergraduate. To honestly answer your question - finding a placement opportunity was a very competitive experience, and at some point I started applying to everything computing / Cyber Security related. After I got some interviews, I sort of started thinking it through and choosing the one I was most excited about. Then I focused my preparation on one specific opportunity, which was JLR.

My advice would be to not restrict yourself to only one specific job title, but look into the industry as a whole (taking in consideration that getting a placement role is quite competitive). At the end of the day, you are at a very early stage of your career, and you might have not yet found a thing that you would enjoy doing the most. So why not give a chance every single opportunity out there (related to the area you are studying of course)?

Take care,
Ilya,

Heyy! Hope your ok

I'm not doing doing a creative computing course, but I am looking into doing a placement year, so I hope my experience can still be helpful.

I'm currently studying my BSc Psychology, which is quite a broad subject and requires work experience depending on what direction you want to go in. I'm personally interested in Clinical Psychology, so I've been researching opportunities related to that field.

What I'd recommend is looking into what opportunities your university offers. For example, at De Montfort University we have ACE internships, which I've applied for to gain experience working in a SEND School with younger students over the summer. Even though it is not directly clinical psychology, the skills are very transferrable and useful for my future career, even if I decide to change pathways.

I'm hoping to get a placement related to the area i want to go in after my second year, as I expect I'll have a clearer idea by then of whether that's the route I want to take. However, it may not always be possible to get a placement directly linked to my interests, as these opportunities can be very competitive or limited. Because of this, I think it's still really important to apply for as many opportunities as you can, since they help you gain experience, build transferrable skills and make useful connections, all of which employers really value.

I personally think the best time to do a placement is after second year, as it is just before the stresses of third year. This allows you to focus wholeheartedly on your final year without distractions, knowing you made the most of every opportunity available to you during your time at university. It’s an investment in your future that can make your final year and your career so much stronger!

I hope this helps!
