Migrant worker student finance

Could someone please help me out? My account was closed today, it’s showing “YOU CANT APPLY YET”. I’m supposed to start my nursing degree in January 2026.

Context: I am Ghanaian. 28. Got my presettled status feb 2022 through my EU mum (has settled status in UK) who is in full time employment.

I applied for full student finance as dependent over 21 child of an EU national but application was refused because The evidence you've provided “does not confirm that you've maintained dependency on your mother while living in the UK”.

Question:
1. Do I need to be dependent on my mother to apply as child of migrant worker? Is there an age limit for this category?

2. Can I get tuition support without being dependent on my mum? Since I have been in the UK for over 3 years and have presettled status, why have I been told I MUST apply through my mum to even get tuition support? Doesn’t the law state that being ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 on presettled status qualifies me for tuition support (even as non-eu)?

3. What’s the next step I can take to get my account reopened to get tuition loan at least?

Hi there.

For your first question, yes, if you are applying as a Family member/ child of EU national who is working in the UK, and you are over 21, you must be able to prove you are financially dependent on the family member to be eligible. This is for the SFE home funding (Maintenance Loan and Tuition Fee).

For your second question, the same also applies. If you are applying for Tuition Fee only via the child of an EU national route, if you are over 21 you still need to prove financial dependency on your family member.

If you are not a UK or EU national you would need to have settled status to qualify if you don't meet the above criteria, unless you have been living in the UK for at least half of your life. Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah,

I mean can I apply independently as a presettled status holder who has been in the UK?

If you are not a UK or EU national you must have Settled Status to qualify independently, unless you have been living in the UK for at least half of your life. Thanks, Leah.
