University of portsmouth - criminology and forensic investigation timetable

I'll be starting the university of portsmouth this September, studying criminology and forensic investigation. I was just wondering if anyone has insight to what the timetables will be like? (How many hours and what days).

Hey! I studied CFS at Portsmouth from 2021-2025, including a placement year! First year was a while ago, so I cannot really remember specifics, but from what I can remember, you'll study around 5 core subjects, some of which will include labs and practicals, and others which are classroom-based. You get allocated a personal tutor who is with you for certain academic skills-based seminars in small groups.
I remember having lectures on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, but this does change depending on timetabling/chosen modules etc, accounting for about 10-15hrs a week. But, I am sure it's different now.

Me too! I think I saw there’s about 30 hours worth of lessons a week ! I’m sorry it’s not much help, I’m also after more information about that!

Thanks for the info, it's good just to get a rough idea of what the week will look like 👍

Thanks, any information is helpful right now. Everything I've seen is so vague, and we won't get a timetable until 2 weeks before the start of the course. Makes it so difficult to organise anything in advance.

Uni timetables are essentially randomly generated by their scheduling software every year. While the number of contact hours will usually stay the same, it is entirely possible one year all the lectures might get scheduled on one day, while the next year every lecture gets scheduled to 9am each day with nothing else the rest of the day for example!

In terms of contact hours though I'd highlight that usually UK full time students are expected to be spending about as much time as a full-time job on their studies so 30-40 hours a week (including contact hours), so even if the course "only" has 12 contact hours a week, you're still expected to spend the balance of that time doing independent study, working on assignments, revising and doing practice work etc. It's probably most practical to plan for roughly 9-5 on campus each weekday, and then just fill the time between lectures with studying (especially if aiming for a 1st)
