Student grants

Hiya..
My daughter is going to uni in September but will be living at home .. I have ADHD and feeling really overwhelmed with all the information out there ..
I’m a single parent so I was wondering where and when do we apply for the grant ?
How it works ie when does it start getting paid out?
Also (sorry overload) we do apply for bursary?
Many thanks

Applications for student loans open in late March for new uni students and April for continuing students, deadline will be sometime in June. What she will get depends on your finances and if she's living at home it will less than if she were living at uni. The amount also depends on whether the uni is in or out of London as obviously living expenses are higher in London! The tuition load is paid in 3 payments and paid directly to the university and the maintenance loan is paid a few days before the term starts so late September, (Usually just before Freshers Week) this is also paid in 3 payments just before the start of each term, so late Sept, early Jan, and April. You will be given the exact payment dates once the loans have been confirmed. Bursary's are different and you'd normally apply directly to the uni for that rather than through student finance. It will all slot into place and the forms are quite straight forward to fill in. I have 2 at uni (1 in Year 1 and 1 doing a Masters) so have filled the forms out multiple times. Good luck to your daughter

https://www.gov.uk/apply-online-for-student-finance You will apply here and it says it will open end March.

You will apply for both the tuition fee loan and the maintenance loan at the same time

You're welcome, when my 1st started uni I was worried about everything and was afraid of getting things wrong or missing deadlines but I found things far easier than expected. The worst than can happen is missing the June deadline but that only means the 1st payment MAY be a bit late but they will still try and process it on time. My daughter submitted her 2nd year application late but still got the money on time. (I do all the submitting now!) Also when you apply it says that it can take up to about 6 weeks for the loans to be confirmed but every single time with us (We've applied 5 times now) they confirmed them within a few days but it will take a little longer if you apply for the maximum loan as you'll need to submit evidence of finances but it still wont be much longer than a week or so. If you can think of any questions feel free to ask, I'll keep on eye on this thread

Also even after you've submitted the form you can amend it easily. We had to do that this year as we put down a London uni in the application but my son didn't get the required grades so we had to change this after results day to the uni he was offered which was outside of London so the maintenance loan amount was different (Less) Sometimes students put what they think is the uni they want to go to down but then change their mind but this is easily changed

Can you confirm what course your daughter will study? If it's healthcare, I can advise on what additional support she may be eligible for.

In that case you would just need to search the uni websites to see if there are any bursaries she may qualify for. If you are from a low-income household and receive the maximum maintenance loan, unis often automatically pay a bursary to these students when they receive the information from student finance.

Normaw has made some good points. Here's a link to a calculator which would give you an idea of how much maintenance loan your daughter may get
