essay results

I'm really worried about my first assignment results from my first semester coming out tomorrow, I worked really really hard on it and spent a lot of time on it and I'm really worried that I won't get the results I worked hard for. I feel like if I get a bad result it'll demotivate me for this semester to work. I get that feedback is required to grow but I can't help feeling that a bad result in proportion to the work I put in is going to make me feel really negative about my own skills. I didn't leave it until last minute, I researched and planned extensively and wrote lots and edited it a lot too against the mark scheme.
Hi Frx,

I completely understand how you feel because when I was waiting on my first uni assignment I felt the same.

The thing to remember is, that regardless of the result, this only reflects you in the first semester and where you are now, it does not reflect you in the semesters and years to come as you learn and experience more uni-style writing. Plus, the feedback you get will be so helpful because it will give you points to act on in your next assignment. Whenever I was writing an assignment I'd have my previous assignment's feedback open in another tab so I remembered what my lecturers had suggested.

Try not to think of it as a judgement of your skills - think of it as a chance to evaluate what you're already doing well and what you could do differently. For context, I got a mid-2:1 for my first assignment, but slowly improved throughout the year to reach some high 2:1s-1sts.

Hopefully this helps and wishing you the best of luck 🙂

Hey @Frxstyx ,
It is completely normal to feel that "results day" anxiety, especially when you’ve poured so much time and energy into your first assignment.
Take a deep breath and keep these points in mind while you wait:

Feedback is Your Secret Weapon: If the result is disappointing, don't let it demotivate you. Read the feedback carefully. Usually, a few small adjustments in your academic "voice" or structure can jump you up an entire grade bracket in the next assignment.

Trust Your Process: You’ve already developed the most important habit: discipline. Researching, planning, and editing ahead of time are the skills that will carry you through your entire degree. Even if this specific essay doesn't hit the mark, your work ethic eventually will.

Wishing you the best of luck! 😊

Hey,

First, take a breath, as the way you approached this assignment already says a lot, regardless of the outcome. You didn’t write anything in panic, you didn’t guess anything, you didn’t just wing it. You researched, planned, edited, and checked your work properly.

One thing to consider is that marks in first year aren’t usually a clean reflection of effort and skills/abilities. You’re still learning how that department works, and how academic writing should look like.

You’re in the best possible position to use the grade/ feedback you get, as you already know how to work properly. Whatever the number is, it’ll never cancel your work, your efforts, or your abilities.

Best of luck!

Hey @Frxstyx,

I know exactly how you feel; I was terrified of getting my first assignment result back. It's hard to know what the expectations are in your first year and it takes a while to adapt to university formatting and academic writing.

Regardless of the score you achieved, you've done well simply by establishing a good work ethic which you can carry with you over the next few years. Read your feedback and take on board any advice offered by your lecturers/markers. I scored a mid 60 in my first assignment and had moved on to mid 70s by second year - this grade is just the start!

Best of luck,
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Hi there!

First of all - congratulations on completing your first assignment. I believe you should have had already received your results at a time when I was writing this post. So if you are comfortable, please feel free to share your result with us, and if at any point you need any help or advice - you are more than welcome to ask

Secondly, even if the grade is not as high as you wanted it to be - please do not feel demotivated. The first assignment is never supposed to be about the grade, especially considering the fact that your first year's grades might not even count towards your degree. The first assignment is always about learning, making the first attempt into academic writing, researching, referencing, etc. Also, I can tell you that you did much more than what I did for my first essay in my first year. For example, I didn't look into a marking scheme at all! Also I submitted it the last day, so you got ahead of the on that point too.

If the grade is lower than you expected, allow it to become a learning moment for you, or you can look at it as a challenge to solve. It should allow you to see which aspects of academic writing you may need to work on, what works well in an essay, and what doesn't.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further support,
Ilya
