Anyone else like this?? Pls help, need advice!

Hi.

I’m a year 12 student who’s currently studying bio chem maths at a level (all edexcel A level not AS). So far, maths and bio I have been finding good, some parts more enjoyable than others. But chemistry….Omg how it’s changed. It used to be my fav science in gcse and now it’s my least fav subject by a mile for a couple reasons: it’s got increasingly harder than I expected, a lot of things we were taught at gcse turnedout to be ‘lies’ to put it in an exaggerated way and for me, it feels like we r going at 100mph during lessons. This feels discomforting as we r constantly told by the teachers oh this is the “easy part”.

My question is I really really want to get better at chem, but when I don’t have a test it’s hard to find revision time for it since I always have a lot of other stuff (that I won’t go into detail about) going on. Then, sometimes I’d forget something we learnt right at the v start and re-learning it all over again is quite painstaking, especially without someone there to explain it to me. I’ve been doing mid in chem tests andwould like to get better. ANY tips would be appreciated.

Whether u were or are in the same position as me, ways that can effectively revise chemistry, any apps websites YT channels, where to get past questions, how I can fit in revision, anything.

Also anywhere to get questions apart from pmt as I find that’s not enough and I can’t exactly tackle a full past paper now,

Also where do u get the motivation to revise? I really want/need to do well in a levels but in a chem test which I have in a few days I’ve done barely anything for, it all just makes me feel so stressed and idk how to describe it like I end up choosing comfort instead of stress now but then it bites me back in the future.

Thank you

Hello,

I always found the best revision for any of my A-levels (I did bio, maths and geography after dropping chemistry because of the issues you are facing) was just to do past papers.

PMT is so amazing because you can find all the past paper questions for a certain topic for the A-Levels, so don't feel the pressure to do a full past paper. https://www.physicsandmathstutor.com/biology-revision/gcse-edexcel/ This is the link you can use for all of the topics broken down.

The other thing is just do like 1/2 past questions per night if that's all you have time for, but consistency really is what helps everything stick. Maybe use Quizlet to make some flash cards and just go over them while you're travelling to college. Those are the strategies I used for bio and geography. If you have a revision guide, try copying it out and each time condense it a little by little until you are at the point that one sentence can trigger you to know a full model answer.

My other top tip is not to stress out too much. You are so early in your journey, and the step from GCSE to A-level for chemistry is massive, so allow yourself to be learning and not be immediately perfect

yes, a lot of what they taught at GCSE are like straight up lies and it is hard. like end of Year 12 I got like a D but now I’m on an A, so trust me I know what I’m talking about, but this might just apply to me, like it might not work for you, but I hope it works for you. I would say that although the content gets easier the more you learn, the more things link very nicely. you might not remember but imagine how confused you probably were at GCSE learning about atoms and ions and electrolysis and all that stuff, but now it’s a piece of cake. it’s similar to A level chemistry, it’s terrifying. like I can imagine you’ve done like s orbitals, p orbitals, topic 4 (I also do Edexcel), topic 2 and maybe even moved onto organic. but all those topics look difficult cuz you’re comparing it to GCSE content so it’s more difficult. but trust me, like once you do organic chemistry 2 in Year 13, organic chemistry 1 is gonna look like light work, trust. and I know that sounds scary but it’s almost like a puzzle piece in a way, like the first two pieces (in this case the topics) are really difficult to put together correctly, but once you have nearly finished it (like the course) all the pieces fit together and you see a bigger picture. it is the same for chemistry, I promise. I barely revised, I simply just tried to piece things together. I went from a D to an A. and I promise you, you will love it again, it’s like one of my fav subjects.

now for revision I have started revising properly now cuz A levels are hella close but anyways. PMT also has a revision section which has past paper questions from that specific topic from all the papers, even the November ones, so then you can do practice papers only on that topic they are quite long tho so maybe do like 1 question a day.
2ND YOU MUST REVISE CHEMISTRY FOR AT LEAST 2 HOURS A WEEK. I don’t know how to give you motivation but it is very quick, the content, so you need to stay up with it. now this revision does not need to be extreme, it can literally just be watching a video on topic 5 and doing some past paper questions, but YOU NEED TO DO IT. (I’m sorry I know it sucks). also little side note: the best way to revise for any of the calculation topics like 5, 10, 11 and 12 is videos and past paper questions. trust me, one thing: watch a video and then do past paper questions and watch that A* zoom to you. and any video works. also do Quizlet flashcards, there are people who make like 120 for you already for one topic and they have that thing where you can tick off the ones you know and keep doing them till you know them all.
I know motivation is hard especially if you’re already finding it hard, but just add it to your Google Calendar, 2 hours of revision every week or anything, and follow it like religion.
also one last tip: pre-read content before you go to your chemistry lessons, just like a 20 minute read over what you might be doing so it gives you base knowledge and makes your lessons feel like revision. and always ask a teacher for help on stuff you don’t get.
I can give more advice on specific topics if you let me know where you are and like notes and resources, but I hope this helped. also sorry if it is so long.

BAD SPWKLING VESION hi there - im in year 13 chemist and all I want to say is 1 yes I lot of what they taught in gsce are like trait up lies and it is hard like end of year 12 I got like a D but now in on A so trust I know wat im tlaimg bout but thi might jsyt apply to me like it might not work for you but I hope it works for you. Hiiii thank you SO MUCH. I read the whole thing and it was super helpful. So far in chem I’ve done topic 1, 2, 3, currently on 4 on inorganic side then 5, and 6 currently on organic side. I think I’m just getting scared cause my skl makes the test harder and Qs not from our exam board so the real thign will feel easier…? I’ll take ur advice for sure and I’ll also try to remember that looking back this time next year all of this will feel easy, which is the only thing that matters really. I think I just gotta review and practice so it doesn’t become too much. Ik I can do it but my procrastinating self stops me from doing so, one day I know it’ll click and I’ll lock in fs.

You going from a D to AN A. AMAZING! You defo grinded and should be so proud of urself!

Thanks so much for the tips I’ll try do 2 hours of chem per week, good idea!

Hi tysmmm for the tips!

Ur right, it is still just the start and I think I forget that sometimes. Just like GCSEs at the start it was super hard and I couldn’t even see how I could get a 7 yet ended up w all 9s in the end. It’s just also the scary fact that this year matters whereas year 10 end of year exams didn’t reaaalllyyy count towards anything, whereas this year i need to get good predicted grades for medicine at uni sooo defo feeling the pressure a LOT more this year and it just feels like it’s going so fast ykkkk 😓

Ur right about past papers, I just need more practice and my procrastinating self stops me from doing so. I promise you and myself I WILL lock in from now on and I will get good predicted.

Tysm again (I love that pmt link)
