Hi there👋

Congratulations on getting an interview at Teesside for dental hygiene.

It’s completely understandable to feel nervous, but try not to let the lack of shadowing or a dental nursing background worry you too much. We understand that many applicants come from Access courses and may not yet have direct clinical experience.

We are looking for students who can demonstrate their transferable skills from the courses they are studying and work experience in an interview. A good way to structure your interview answers is by using the STAR model. This helps you give clear, confident responses and ensures you fully answer each question.

✴️ Using STAR, you should:

Situation briefly set the scene of what was happening.

Task explain what your responsibility or challenge was.

Action focus on what you did, highlighting transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, resilience, empathy or problem-solving.

Result explain the outcome and, importantly, what you learned and how this prepares you for dental hygiene training.

. These can be clearly linked to the interview criteria:

Your study and research skills show knowledge of the profession and motivation.

Managing a demanding course demonstrates an understanding of the pressures of the programme and profession.

Communication in group work or presentations shows your ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.

Reflecting on feedback and improving your performance shows professional potential, which aligns strongly with NHS values ➡️ https://www.england.nhs.uk/2014/02/nhs-values-in-action/

We hope that helps and wish you all the best for your interview!
