NHS bursary

Can anyone explain how the NHS bursary works for healthcare uni courses e.g some people I’ve spoken to get 5k in the span of 3 years or how long their course is but some get 5k a year.

The NHS bursary is for medical or dental students.

The NHS Learning Support Fund (NHS LSF) is for healthcare courses such as nursing, midwifery, radiography, physio, SLT, etc. The NHS LSF offers a training grant of £5k per year (£6k for some subjects) for all three years of the course if you study at a uni in England.

To apply for an NHS bursary for 2026, is it in October? I'm starting my MSc Dietetics course in September.

Do you mean the NHS Learning Support Fund or the NHS Wales Bursary?

You can usually start to apply late Spring for courses starting in September. If you are applying for SFE, you need to wait until you get your confirmation letter from SFE before you apply for the NHS LSF.

Hey @Cinnamonbunlover

The NHS bursary is typically a £5000 grant each year (Although for specific circumstances listed on the website,e you may receive more) and this is split across 3 payments during the year. It works well with student finance as I tend to receive my NHS LSF payment between student finance payments .

Hope this helps

Im confused - I know the NHS ENgland offers 5k per year for allied health, If I take the Wales bursary (whichpays full tuition fees) does that mean that i can only apply for a reduced maintence grant? ie less that what i would get if I hadnt got the welsh bursary - confused!!

Yes it is the case that you get a reduced maintenance loan if you get your funding from SFE but take the NHS Wales bursary. Also, you won't be eligible for the NHS LSF if you study in Wales. Think carefully about where you choose to study a healthcare course - it doesn't usually make financial sense for someone from England to study in Wales. The following thread explains it in detail:
