Ual or Kingston ??

I got a non conditional offer from Kingston University and an interview invitation from UAL Camberwell for BA Graphic Design. And honestly, I am stuck.

Kingston is ranked top 1 in the UK for Graphic Design, but it is not very well known, and I worry about visibility after graduation. UAL has a huge name and reputation, but most student reviews I have seen are very negative, even the positive ones often mention dropping out.

I want to actually be taught graphic design, not just pay for the name. I also do not like living in central London, and I do not want to spend a lot of money on something I might hate.

If anyone has real experience or advice, I would really appreciate it.

Hi @avenging-barrel

I previously attended UAL for a year at LCC but did ultimately drop out.

That said, I think you may have already answered your own question. You’ve mentioned that you don’t enjoy living in central London, and studying at UAL would require you to do exactly that.

Kingston is well regarded within the industry, and it’s generally praised for its courses and graduate outcomes.
I’d recommend attending open days and speaking directly with student ambassadors to get an honest perspective on their experiences. It might also be helpful to look on LinkedIn and see where graduates from both courses are now working.

Thank you so much for replying to my question.

Yes, I am seriously thinking about Kingston, I really like the university. I have also thought about attending an open day, I just need to find some time to arrange it.

The reason I am still deciding between these two options is that I understand I may leave England after graduating. I know that UAL is more well known across Europe than Kingston, and for me it could be a better option in terms of having more opportunities to find work abroad.

Especially for Graphic Design, on a professional basis you're more likely to be judged on your portfolio of work and quality of your previous professional experience than the name of your university. I'd go to the Uni you want to go to. But don't place too much focus on league tables... they are often a bit of a misnomer for more creative courses.

Are you an international student? I've applied to both UAL and Kingston, and the only reason I haven't considered Kingston is due to the fees. That being said, if you want to work in London in the future, don't worry about Kingston being "unknown".

It sounds like Kingston would suit you more, I've heard the teachers are very nice and the community vibe is really there.

I am not originally from the UK, but I do pay the same tuition fees as UK residents, the home fee. However, after graduating, there is still a real possibility that I may not be able to stay in England and may need to move elsewhere in Europe.
In that case, Kingston would likely be less well recognised, as I would not be staying in London to work.

Also based on the reviews I have seen and my research on LinkedIn
it seems that graduates from UAL tend to have more opportunities and are more likely to find work after finishing their studies.

Nowadays uni names aren't really important. What matters most is your portfolio. Where do you think you'll get the most value? Visit both unis and you'll know. It's not about what uni you go to, it's about extracting as much from the course as possible so that you can have an outstanding portfolio. Ual I've heard doesn't offer as much help and neglects most students except for the top ones. However, they may be able to provide you with better internships. Kingston teaches better skills and gives more aid, and their internships are not that bad.

Hi @avenging-barrel

It's great to hear you are thinking Kingston!

Plus considering an open day! I would definitely recommend going to open days for the universities you are interested in, this really helped me make a decision. It is a great chance to get a feel for the university as to what it might be like to live and study there, see the facilities and speak to current students and lectures. You can find our next open days on the website https://www.kingston.ac.uk/study/open-days

From my experience I have found in the creative industry Kingston does have a name and is a great place for industry connections. I have a whole post here that you might be interested in - How Kingston Prepares you for Industry

I also agree the location is great, I love being just outside central London, so you can still enjoy everything London has to offer but it's a bit cheaper and quieter.

I have a few other posts here you may be interested in.

hey! i've just accepted an unconditional offer from kingston for graphic design. i went to their open day a while back and the amount of facilities they have is really impressive, they also made a point to explain that you can book a session for someone to show you how to use any unfamiliar equipment so you can actually use all of the facilities (rather than having access to all of them but no clue how to use them LOL).

there are also macs in the library & classrooms. some unis don't have that and require you to buy a laptop (cough cough uni of leeds) so that's nice

i also considered UAL but don't like the idea of living in central london so didn't end up applying. kingston is really nice, there's lots of green spots (there was a massive park near a river full of deer which i thought was cool) and there is an aldi, maccies, a couple gyms, and lots of other shops within about a ten minute walk of the school of art.

there's an accommodation right next to the school of art which i saw, tbh the room was tiny and pretty expensive but if you prefer living closer to where you're studying it could be an option.

the other accommodations are a bit bigger, some are further away but there is a free kingston bus that links them to the uni IIRC so for me that isn't a problem and i'll be staying in one of those hopefully.

i also noticed a board full of posters and ads in the corridor the students had made for bands & clubs or looking for help from students doing specific courses and during the tour it was also emphasised that they encourage student collaboration, so you get lots of experience working in teams and get to meet lots of people.

there is also this outdoor area in the school of art with a river and i thought it was very cute

sorry for the massive paragraph lol!! i'm very excited to go in september, hopefully this helps you out a bit )

Hi @maniloveonepiece

Love this response and great to hear you will be joining Kingston!

I lived in the accommodation next to the school of art (Middle Mill), here's a post I did if you want more insight
My Experience Living at Middle Mill - The Student Room
I assume the accommodation you are considering is Seething Wells, this accommodation is really nice and newly renovated. There are also lots of great communal spaces and the bus picks you up on the accommodation site.

I love all the posters at Knights Park, it is a really collaborative space. Again I have a couple posts you might be interested in to hear more about what it is like to study at Knights Park and what the student life is like.
