So so tired of failing maths

Hi all,
I’ve already posted in here about maths so this might be a bit of a rant lol. I’m in Year 13 studying Bio, Chem and Maths, wanna do Medicine at uni and tbh I’ve always been an essay- or content-heavy kinda person. In Yr 12 I was getting mainly As and A*s in my topic tests and got an A overall for my end of year. But in Yr 13 I’ve had multiple topic tests from three different teachers (Pure. Stats and Mechanics) since September every week or every two weeks (we go through content so fast lol) and since then I’ve only gotten 3 As across all disciplines. I’ve been working on my maths but in the exams the questions are different to what I study and I’m just so tired of getting back-to-back Us, Ds and Cs and in my most recent mock I got a C overall and I’m rlly scared about missing required grades for med (AAA). I kinda wish I did another subject instead like History or Politics since my passion lies in them too although it’s too late for that now. I only have a few months until exams so idk how to jump from a D to an A in this time. Pls help me all help appreciated 😭

Heya!! This is so so understandable and I can promise you, you're not the only one!! I was going through the exact same thing and I think the main thing that helped me was identifying which specific topics kept leading to silly mistakes.
E.g i struggled with integration so i made a cheat sheet and actually tried to understand and identify like the 'identifying factors' or whatever theyre cakked haha.
I would definitely recommend just consistently doing exam practice etc and just having a process to how to approach questions.
If theres any specific topics i can help with i'd be more than happy to help!!))

Have you used Dr Frost's website?

Perhaps hire a tutor. They can look over your past papers. See where you’ve gone wrong and focus on that area.

They can also focus on exam technique etc. if you start now you’ve plenty of time to improve

You don't need a tutor to do that - you can spot where you lost marks yourself.

Yes, but tutors can help them with exam techniques and why they lost marks in those areas where perhaps they thought they’d answered fine

Teachers can do that and traffic lighting those areas is the way forward.

Most schools put on regular revision sessions and there's so many great websites there is no need for tutors.

Understood. Hopefully they go to a school where teachers will go above and beyond. As most do not have the time to do that for 30 or so pupils. Hence 1-1 with a tutor is well worth the money - especially as it could make the difference for the OP to get their dream

Sorry where are you getting your information from? EVERY school I know, and I know a lot, lay on additional classes or have help sessions. NO tutor is ever necessary for Maths these days.

Hey,
Don't stress too much, its clear that you are capable of achieving high grades, so dont let this small dip get to you too much. Focus on highlighting the topics you are clearly struggling with and do as many past paper questions or random questions you can find- Alevel maths revision is a good website. Then if you find that there's certain types of questions or topics you dont understand and consistentantly dont know how to work out, go to your teacher and ask for help, or find videos online that might help, or maybe hire a tutor these last couple of months to really target those topics. But main advice it these last few months just keep on doing questions.

That’s lucky for your area. Around here there is no time to help individuals. To point out there faults etc. it’s all so generic and not tailored. Staff shortages. Just not enough free time anymore to help the students

Which county is this? I've been at school in one county, done teaching practice in three and taught in two more - I also have friends who teach in other counties. None of us know of a state school where Year 11 don't get additional support outside classes.

yeah i personally had tutors before and the difference was night and day. helped me get A*s. some teachers at sch are good but it helps having 1-1s especially if you’re REALLY doing bad in a subject and just can’t understand it. so yeah it op is rly struggling and their parents are happy to pay, maybe they could consider tutoring for a few months

In Maths the websites now are brilliant and tutoring is really not needed.

hi some people just benefit from having things explained to them in person in detail where they have time to ask as many detailed questions as they want. i’m not sure why you’re so against tutoring, no one’s forcing anyone, its just one of the many suggestions on this thread. no need to be so difficult 🀝

Many tutors are unqualified and don't explain properly - teachers deal with misconceptions introduced by tutors more often than you think.

Always get help from a teacher first -
