Is it healthy workload to do part-time job while studying engineering at Bath?

I’m a international student, considering to attend University of Bath for BEng EEE. If I work 10 hours part-time is it sustainable? Is it likely I’ll still get first honor?
Hi simulated,

Good question. As it happens a lot of students do part-time work whilst studying, and whilst Engineering courses here tend to have quite a bit of lecture and lab time, there is no reason why you couldn't make it work.

I would always say that your studies have to come first as to get a first will require consistent engagement with the content and your feedback as well as independent study. However, I worked as a student ambassador for about 5 hours a week alongside studying at Bath and found it fine 🙂 in fact it was a helpful way to allow me to meet more people, have some time doing something fun and different, and refresh my mind between study sessions making them more productive.

So its entirely up to you if you decide to work - just remember to keep an eye on any visa restrictions around working in term time. Campus jobs such as being a student ambassador are really good because they're flexible (i.e. you can sign up to do events and shifts to fit around your lectures and labs) and generally more understanding of your commitments as a student than jobs in town. This way you can vary the amount of hours you do a week depending on what you have on.

TLDR: yes, you can absolutely work part-time whilst studying - just remember to put your course first and I'd probably suggest to help you do that that you consider jobs on campus.

I hope this helps a bit! - Current Vacancies for students at Bath as a list can be found here! 🙂
