Feeling low in the winter months

Although Christmas was very cold, nothing prepared us for January’s frostiness. And with extremely icy conditions and a dark sky, it is unfortunately easy to drift into loneliness and a low mood.
It’s easy to leave work/uni and feel like a cloud is flying above you because it’s already dark at 3pm 🌧️. But I’m here to help with a few secret ways that can help with this low mood🙊:

Try and take advantage of every small light. Open your windows early in the morning and make your hangout plans in the morning when there’s light.
Keeping up with a routine with regular sleep can also help you with low mood. If you find yourself staying up late at night, try and be active/exercise during the morning. So that at night, your body is ready to rest.
Keep up with your vitamin D. Our skin produces vitamin D in sunlight which in turn increases our serotonin levels “our happy hormone”. In winter, there’s minimal sunlight and lower vitamin D levels in our bodies, taking daily vitamin D tablets can help your mood.

Do you have any other advice on how to beat low mood in winter? ☁️ 😼

Home-made tomato soup!

As well as all the other lovely unprocessed plant foods that help with mood / energy levels.

Such as home-cooked bean dishes - especially when eaten regularly. For the fibre and feeding our good gut bacteria, which in turn feed us with wonderful compounds, such as butyrate.

Or beetroot for the nitrate.

For me physical activity always help with the down mood (unless it is more than just a down mood). In winter it is hard but you can still go to gym or do yoga.
