studying for biology gcse

hi! I recently got back my biology mock and was very much disheartened when I saw a 6 - I was 2% away from a 7 + my target is an 8

my teacher made a mistake whilst making the mock and we had an 1h 45m to do 131 marks (instead of the usual 100!!)

I wasn't able to finish all the questions which may have contributed to my lower score but still

does anyone have any websites or studying techniques that they find useful? I already find biology quite tricky but I would say overall I'm a good student in most subjects

Hii!!
so for me, i struggled with exam technique and i found that specifically for longer questions i wouldnt end up getting many marks. What helped was trying to break down the question into 'and whats' for example like chloroplasts do this 'and what' or 'because what' etc etc so its just trying to link things together.
I also found it helpful to try and link topics together in a colour coded mind map, im a visla learner haha.
Are there any particular topics i could help with?

thank you for the reply!! ❤️*🩹

I do aqa and some topics i found hard were

b4 organising plants & animals

b6 preventing and treating disease

b11 hormonal control

b12 homeostasis

also for some reason i find any calculation questions quite challenging,, i have no problem with maths but i find the q's in biology always throw me off

Of course no problem!!
From what i remember those are quite content heavy, and what helped me was doing practice questions on PMT and watching a bunch of videos on the topics. I think freesciencelessons guy was lowkey great and so was cognito! if you like active recall i think quizlet will most likely have public sets you can use.
As for calculations, I found it helpful to write down the side of the page what info i have and dont have and try to find an equation that uses a couple of those values, bc i found it hard to keep reading through the text haha.
Please dont hesitate to ask for any more advice, and remember, you got this!!

oh i see!! do you recommend I just watch the videos and do practice Q's or create mindmaps / notes alongside it too?

I'll try using your advice for my next couple of tests 🤗
I appreciate all your help and encouragement!!!!!

I think it honestly depends on how your learning style is!
For me it was visual so having videos and mind maps were most effective )
I would absolutely recommend doing practice questions, biology is defo about understanding types of questions and what the markscheme wants
Honestly dont even worry I'm more than happy to help!)))

Hi,

I'd recommend going through the specification and using RAG (red, amber, green) to identify any weak areas. Making active recall resources such as flashcards and mindmaps, completing topic by topic questions on physicsand mathstutor and then moving onto full past papers once confident. I used FreeScienceLessons on YouTube and Cognito to help my understanding.

Hope this helps, good luck with your studies!
