Gcse help!

Hi guys I’m new here but anyways I’m in year 9 and I’m choosing gcses in Feb, and I have to pick three and one back up cus I’m already doing English lit, English lang, maths, politics and if I try hard enough, trip,e science. I was thinking Spanish, geo and textiles? And then food tech as a backup? Idk tho because I think dermatology interests me (the money too) but idk where to start really. I realllyyyy enjoyed textiles as a DT last year and I like learning languages and I think I’ll just pick geo just for a filler kinda. Pls lemme know ur opinions! (Btw before anyone starts ranting about how hard textiles gcse coursework is, don’t worry I KNOWWWWWWW🥹✌🏻)

Take Geography a life changing experience, other than that, the subject its self doesn't matter just focus on achieving high grades in it

I dont know how big your school is and how it works for you but i chose food tech as my top option and because it was so popular only those who put it as there top option got it. so i would definitly consider another back up incase your head of year/higher teachers say that it doesnt work as a backup although im sure you will get what you want as its rare for you to get a reserve

As said before its not too big a deal what you choose as long as you can achieve there Xx goodluck

Hi @unicorncupcake23,

If you're interested in dermatology, Triple Science is a good start as it'll help set the foundation for further STEM study at A-Level. GCSE Spanish, Textiles and Geography are a good range of subjects and if you enjoy them there's no reason not to choose them. I studied GCSE Art and Design and although the workload was a bit heavier than my other subjects, I didn't find it too difficult in the long run and really enjoyed the classes themselves. 🙂

Best of luck with your choices!
Eve (Kingston Rep).

Pick subjects that have low workload alongside textiles, as you need to focus on triple science if you're going to do dermatology

i completely second that! most of my friends either took textiles or art and so go home with huge amounts of work as theyre all perfectinists while i chose subjects that have SO much less homework and am so happy i did this i do think that you will see the benifits of less heavy subjects over time xx

food tech is way better as a filler, geo is too much content and a lot to remember where as food tech will heavily link in with ur triple science

Isn’t food tech mostly food and like nutrition ? I don’t get how it gets to triple, anyways I did my physics test today and I have to get an average of 7 in all my exams this year for triple science, and idk if I got a 7 in this one 🥹. Anyways, I was thinking, I MIGHT choose media as a back up? As it’s like EVEURTHING so surely it would help somehow? thank you to everyone replying btw, helps a lot!

hi! I do Spanish and textiles gcse (year 11) and I love them both! I think they both fit in with your options pretty well.

If your school does DT textiles rather than art and design textiles (which is what my school does) honestly the workload is pretty manageable as long as you put the effort in. You don’t start your final coursework until late year 10/ early year 11 so year 10 textiles is relitavely chilled (again, this is if you’re doing D&T textiles) one thing I would say is the written exam is a little annoying as there are some sections on things like wood and plastics from the product design which I personally don’t like but certainly not a reason to put you off. I do fine art as well as textiles and I can say with certainty that the coursework for textiles is much more manageable.

In my opinion Spanish is a pretty manageable subject too, especially if you have a good teacher. For a lot of people I know, it kind of “clicked” at a certain point where you suddenly understand sentences and vocabulary much more easily. Obviously this doesn’t happen without effort. But yeah I would really recommend Spanish! Super fun and useful.

Sorry you didn’t even really ask for opinions on these subjects.. I just wanted to make sure you were not discouraged from picking them as they’re both great!
(Also I don’t do triple science but from what I’ve heard I would recommend)

Food tech is a lot of biology you’ll do in science! If your a humanities person then do take media however most people I know disliked it

From my experience, geography and food tech has a lot of links to biology so it could really help to build your foundation in the science field and my friends who take food tech really enjoy the practical and statically it has a very high 9-7% rates.

only take language if you actually like learning it and have a passion for it

Where DT/textiles you can gain a lot of manual dexterity and hands-on activities which is common in the dermatology sector.
