English at York or Durham?

Hello! I am very, very conflicted between these two great universities. I was rejected from Oxford, and had convinced myself I would also be rejected from Durham, but I found out at the start of the week that I had received and offer. I am very torn between the two. The grades aren't much of a difference, with York being AAA, and Durham being A*AA, and both are collegiate universities. I'd love to be a part of a student newspaper and maybe theatre, and also being involved in music societies. Does anyone have any advice on how to try and make a decision?

Go to the offer-holder days for both unis as they give you a chance to talk to staff in depth and to have another look at the department.

Then look at the modules and optional modules for all years of the course and think about what you would choose. Does one course stand out above the other?

Then think about what the locations offer in terms of accommodation, societies, social life, transport links home and costs.

No brainer. Durham is ranked higher than York on nearly everything. Academics, student happiness, etc etc. The statistics don’t lie.
Hey @cowboylikeme11,

Congratulations on both of your offers! It's a really tough decision, but if you're able to, we'd always encourage our offer holders to join us at a Visit Day, as this is the best opportunity to get a sense of whether you can see yourself studying with us. These events give you the chance to find out more about general student life at York, such as accommodation, student support, etc. but also you would spend the afternoon with your academic department, learning more about the course you've applied for and how it's taught and assessed, the different pathways you can take through your degree, get a taste of what it's like to experience a real lecture taught by one of our own academics, and chat to staff and current students to ask them any questions you might have.

In terms of student societies, there is so much to choose from at York and a huge array of student media and theatre societies to explore - you can find out more on the students' union website. If you're not able to join us for a Visit Day but want to find out more about anything to do with English at York, you can always email us at [email protected].
