Bereaved Mum, help with student finance

Hi. I lost my husband suddenly in a car accident in July 2025. My daughter was about to go into her 3rd year of uni-a year studying abroad. She will be coming back to do her 4th year. My other daughter has been accepted to uni and will start her 1st year in September. I'm just wondering how student loans are assessed? Obvious our household income has dropped significantly, I'm now a low paid, widowed mum of 3, my husband brought in the bulk of the household income. My eldest daughter did notify SF of her change in circumstances but didn't get any response. I'm really quite anxious about the whole process. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Sheepygirl,

I am sorry to hear of your loss. We would only use your household income details to calculate the entitlement for the students moving forward. If you daughter has sent evidence to confirm the circumstances, this should be reviewed by an assessor. Our current processing timescales are approximately 15 working days with subject to change depending on our current volumes. If that timeframe has passed, it would be best for your daughter to contact directly so that this can be looked into.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I spoke to my daughter at the weekend, shes currently in East Asia on her year abroad. She didn't actually contact Student Finance at all. Is it worth me sending in her Dads death certificate? At least then it would be in her records and for my other daughter who is off to university in September this year. I'm really concerned as I barely now have an income, my husband was the main breadwinner. With two children at uni and another child still at home, its quite worrying. Thanks for any help.
