Applying for sfe after finishing assessment only year

Just for some context I am a January intake; I was an assessment only student last year. The re-sit board for my course just took place and they’ve given the go ahead for me to proceed to third year. Hence, why I am only just completing my application. I started it in August and I wasn’t sure if I was going to third year.

There are two questions on the application I’m unsure about:

''Did you attend the course last year?'' Technically I was enrolled, but I wasn’t in attendance as I was assessment only status. So I am unsure whether to say yes or no.

And the second question ''Are you returning to your course after a break agreed by your university or college?'' Does assessment only status count as a break?

Another thing I wanted to ask is regarding the maintenance loan. On the final page where it shows how much maintenance I’ll be entitled to, it's showing pro rate, usually for part time students. From August to December that page showed a higher amount and now that we are in January it’s been significantly reduced.

One final thing, as I was assessment only last year, my DSA couldn’t be put in place, as I wasn’t entitled to student finance. I had my needs assessment last year, so the report with all my support is complete. Will that report be applied this year? When I complete my DSA application alongside my sfe application?

This is causing a lot of stress, as I've just had welcome week and don't want to complete my re-enrolment until I've submitted my sfe/dsa applications.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi zxna, for what you are advising, you would be have been classed as an External / Not in Attendance / Exam Only student. Students' retaking exams/modules externally aren't eligible to receive student support, students' normally won't be charged fees as they're not attending their course on a full time basis.

Did you attend the course last year? - No.

Are you returning to your course after a break agreed by your university or college? - No.

DSA application - Yes, we require students to submit an application for DSA each year, this can be submitted as part of the application process. We will normally review the evidence previously submitted as part of the review.

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for your reply!

Regarding my maintenance loan, its basing it on my household income (parents). I'm 26 now, so I am technically classed as an independent student status and don't need to provide my parents income details. Last year, slc sent an email to update my employment details and I selected 'supported by parents'. Do you think that's the reason why my account reverted back to household income assessed?

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your reply!

Unfortunately, it just keeps saying there are no sfe officers at the minute. Do you know what time they are usually available?

Hi there, it should automatically pop up into a queue when an adviser is available.

Alternatively, if you call us on 0300 100 0607 we'll be able to assist via the telephone. Thanks, Jason

Hi Jason,

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.

I managed to get through! The advisor said once my application is submitted and they review it, they won't ask for my parent's income assessment.
