Good afternoon,

There is an ambassador scheme at the University of Reading where prospective students can message current students; more information is available here. They will be able to provide you with an insider's perspective on the degree and answer any questions you may have about the course.

All the best,

Hi. What is it like studying Biomed Eng, how hard is it (Heavy physics/maths or balanced?), how is social life, how are the job prospects for students studying BME at CSG.

Is it advisable to do a placement year or a Masters or both, to guarantee a job after studies?

Have anyone got an offer for Biomedical engineering?

Good afternoon,

It's great to hear you have applied for biomedical engineering. Often, individual universities have their own uni-specific threads; you may be able to find more students on those threads, as well as this one. 🙂

We currently have a University of Reading Applicant Thread 2026, where new students can find and talk to one another. Similarly, the student ambassadors have posted key tips for prospective students.

All the best,

Hi. What is it like studying Biomed Eng, how hard is it (Heavy physics/maths or balanced?), how is social life, how are the job prospects for students studying BME at CSG.

In terms of difficulty, it is definitely a STEM-based degree, so yes, there is maths and physics involved, especially in the earlier years. However, the first year is designed to go over the core fundamentals and bring everyone to a similar technical level. So even if people come from slightly different backgrounds, you won’t feel rushed or out of place. They really focus on building strong foundations before moving into more specialised topics.

The course is quite balanced. You’ll study maths and physics concepts, but they’re applied to medical and biological contexts, which makes it feel more purposeful and less abstract. As you progress, you get into areas like biomechanics, medical devices, imaging, and healthcare technologies. It’s challenging, but manageable if you stay consistent and make use of the support available.

Social life is genuinely what you make of it. There are lots of societies, including many engineering-related ones, which are a great way to learn something new while having fun. They’re also a really good place to meet people from different degrees and year groups, develop skills, and even start building your professional network early on. I personally got involved in an engineering society and it made a huge difference to my confidence and overall uni experience.

In terms of job prospects, the university places a strong focus on employability from first year. We have modules that help develop job-related skills such as teamwork, presentations, technical writing, and project work. The careers team also actively supports students with placements, internships, CV workshops, and networking events. Biomedical Engineering is quite versatile, so graduates go into medical device companies, healthcare tech, research, data-related roles, further study, and more.

Hope that helps, and feel free to let me know if you have anymore questions 😊
