Should I apply to LAE Stratford or Harris Westminster for sixth form?

Hello, I'm currently in year 11 and my predicted grades are 999999888. I've applied to both Harris Westminster(waiting to hear back about the entrance exam results) and London Academy of Excellence Stratford, both are around 45 minutes from where I live by public transport, so distance isn't really a concern for me.

As someone aiming to study medicine at a Russel group university(planning to do biology, chemistry, maths, EPQ/possibly further maths ), It is important for me to go to a sixth form that offers numerous super/extra curricular experiences, as well as lots of academic and social connections, events and opportunities.

A big part of why I'm aiming for academically selective sixth forms like HWSF and LAE is to surround myself with people who are strongly motivated, inside and outside the classroom, so I myself can feel the drive and pressure to perform to the best of my abilities.

Which sixth form would be the best for me?

Hiii!

Im in the same situation as you (but I don't want to do medicine)

From what I've heard HWSF is a lot stronger in their humanities department than STEM

Also a lot of teachers I know say that LAE gives more opportunities as they recieve a lot of funding

Personally I think you could get into both with your grades (though hwsf relies more on entrance exams and interviews)
Both schools are great imo

idk about lae but i went hwsf and it really sounds like it fits everything you’ve just said. an absolute TON of super and extracurriculars are available and encouraged and they really push us to go top unis and for med specifically there is a lot of support. i have a thread called ‘i went to hwsf ama’ where i answer a lot of questions in detail and one of my comments is about the support they give for med/dent applicants. feel free to comment there or pm me for specific questions. best of luck n i hope you get all your offers and get to choose at the end which one you want

btw just so yk apparently hwsf don’t offer four a levels anymore but im not sure if they still let you do 3 and an epq. idk. they said they still offer extra qualifications or smth? its just something i briefly read in the newsletter.

you should check the website or even call them to ask specific questions abt this if it’s rly important that you do 4.

regardless, 4 a levels is a waste of time imo and even if you did 4 and got A*s, unis only look at ur top 3. for med it’s not necessary at all (coming from a previous dent and current med applicant).

Hii! It's nice to find someone in the same situation as me, I joined the LAE virtual open evening and it really does seem like they offer a lot more for extra/super curricular opportunities than HWSF but maybe that's because I haven't heard a lot about HWSF. For now, HWSF is my first choice mainly because I currently go to a Harris school, but now I'm not sure and I'm pretty lost on what would be best for me

I just want to ask how much HWSF offer to support students applying for medicine, especially for the UCAT, med interviews, work experience, etc., because my current secondary school doesn't do work experience, so I was hoping to get some either in gcse summer on in year 12/13

UCAT: there was a teacher-run ucat class on tuesdays that was very popular. there were also student run lunchtime clubs for both med and dentistry that went over ucat.

interviews: for med and dent they had tailored mock interviews with the teachers and they even got outside actors for the roleplay stations. was very very useful. also in med society, after everyone had done their ucat, we did mmi practice for months.

work experience: teachers were always looking for work experience and resources to send us. they really help especially if you’re widening participation (im not though). they would check our personal statements a lot and if there was no work experience or not enough, they helped or encouraged us to find some because they recognise the importance. i already had work experience without help from the school. i applied for the great ormond street wex for med and later when i wanted to do dentistry i just called all my local dentists and asked if i could shadow. only one said yes but that’s all you need.
