Kingston University Illustration Animation

Hello!

I recently received an unconditional offer to study Illustration animation at Kingston University and am thinking of accepting it.

I was hoping to ask a few questions about the student experience, particularly:

- how collaborative vs independant is the work?
- what is the class environment like generally?
- what did your first week of classes look like?

I am also interested in how students settle in socially, as this is something I am a little anxious about.

Hey,

Congratulations on your unconditional offer! It's great to hear that you're strongly considering Kingston. 😁

I didn't study BA Illustration Animation but I did study BA Fine Art and Art History at the Knights Park campus. In general, the KSA environment is a good mix of collaborative and independent: some students loved doing collaborative work whilst others preferred focusing on their own independent projects. I had a few collaborative projects throughout my course (e.g. putting on a group exhibition) but my day-to-day work was mostly independently-led in a shared studio. Others in that same studio near exclusively did group projects because they liked working with others.

There's different types of classes at university-level, so the environment of each depends on the class itself. Lectures were usually quite calm and peaceful whilst seminars and workshops involved more discussion. Even though there was around 90 people on my course, we all became quite tight-knit so there was never any awkwardness when speaking up in classes or discussing our work during critiques.

The first week of classes at KSA is usually an introduction to the workshops (in my course, we had a Health and Safety induction to the 3D workshop which involved making a little cork boat that's still on my shelf to this day) and an introduction to your modules. You'll likely meet the key faculty members/course staff and have a meeting with your personal tutor, who'll support you throughout the year.

I'm quite introverted so I had the same concerns as you in terms of settling in socially. However, I quickly made friends with lots of people on my course and lots of people outside of it simply by showing up to class and getting involved with whatever I was interested in on campus (e.g. societies, events, exhibitions).

Hope this helps and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Eve (Kingston Rep).
