Any options will be fine. Just get good grades in them and pick subjects you enjoy.

I'm a current law student, and I can say that GCSE subjects really don't have much of an impact besides what grades you get for maths and English. Even A-level subjects rarely matter, as I studied Biology, Geography and Maths and am on track to get either a 2:1 or 1st class degree. I would just check with the sixth form/college the student is planning to attend to see if they have any prerequisites to study a particular subject at A-level.

Hi,

As mentioned above, it’s best for a GCSE student to choose subjects they enjoy and are likely to do well in, as grades are what matter most at this stage rather than specific subjects.

Hope this helps,

As mentioned above, for GCSEs unis won't care which options are taken!

To add some explanation, this is because if unis care about GCSEs, for specific subjects they normally will only be requiring specific grades in national curriculum subjects UK students have to take anyway (maths, English, occasionally science albeit that's more for medicine); usually if any specified subjects are called out with grade requirements for GCSE by unis it will be maths and English language (as measures of numeracy/literacy). Beyond that if unis look at GCSEs (or formally "score" them) for admissions, they normally are just looking at the overall grade profile (for example some unis look at number and proportion of A*s i.e. 8/9 grades achieved), so the individual subject choices aren't a consideration.

Therefore as you say it's best to just choose the subjects she thinks she can do best in (which will also usually be the ones she enjoys the most!). Subject choice does become more of an important factor at A-level (albeit for law it's pretty flexible), so it might be worth revisiting the matter at that time but for now any subjects will be fine as long as she can do well in them hopefully
