ooh !! do you have passive understanding of cantonese - is it like, can you hear their conversations and understand everything they say, but you don't have the words to answer? that's exactly what my sister is like.

if that's the case, i'm gonna be honest and say you will need an accomplice if you want to surprise them :3 because speaking is an immersive act that comes with practice - so get, like, an understanding aunt or something who wants you to be able to speak cantonese, and have like 15min video calls with them every day, and force yourself to speak cantonese, when talking about mundane stuff like your day. trust me - you have WAY MORE passive knowledge of the language than you think, you need to push it out. let them correct you, and repeat.

also, when around your family, force yourself to try and think in cantonese - start by translating your thoughts to the language. it will become easier over time ! if you also want to learn the reading/writing that is a whole other story thanks to diglossia...........

good luck with this endeavour (加油啊!) and good luck with your gcses too !! ❤️ thanks for popping in :3

I would say I have a basic passive understanding of cantonese (although I didn't know it was called that). thanks for the advice!!

Hey, amazing grades! I also do edexcel igcse english lang and lit- please can you give me some tips to get a grade 9 plss
Thanks 🙂

hi there ! i'm generally better at language than lit, it's way easier to get full marks on lang. for lit do you have coursework? because if you polish your coursework obsessively and ensure you get full marks you just need 60/90 marks from englit p1 to get a 9 :3

for both lang and lit, memorise all possible prose and poetic techniques, especially higher-level ones like lexical/semantic field, polysyndeton, neologism, parataxis, etc, and just take your anthology and practice spotting where they are. the analysis doesn't matter as much (*as in, doesn't need to be what's in the mark schemes; as a matter of fact you're more likely to score higher with original points. a classmate once said that the end-stopped line in a poem about plants is the seed.) - as long as your waffle can be justified AND you link it to (a) the effect on the reader, what the reader feels and (b) what the writer's intentions were (ie. to emphasise the pitfalls of a concentration of power?), it's fine.

do tons of practice questions and get your teacher to mark every single one and ask for feedback. if you're not in a school where that is available, genuinely just send it to chatGPT or whatever AI engine you use accompanied with the mark scheme - and tell it "you don't like this work" or something negative so they mark more harshly and constructively.

also try and make up some random philosophical-sounding analysis - in my recent mock i think i wrote that loneliness was a dramatic device used by steinbeck to emphasise the something or another in american society and was a paradox of blah blah (no clue, it was THAT waffly) but if you have good writing skills the markers eat that up because they think you know what you're doing 🤣 do this for structure too, especially structure as most candidates focus on language so you'd get a huge boost if you can analyse structure in depth. look at like play-novelette form (links to claustrophobia), drawing room plays, petrarchan sonnets, or any funky type (like prayer for birth) and make up some deep-sounding analysis.

as for the creative tasks on language, if you want to maximise for full marks there - for transactional, aim to make the examiner FEEL STUFF. like make them cry with a melodramatic sad story in your transactional format, it's basically a free marks boost if they can see you manipulate language. and for the imaginative, treat it like coursework and come up with a really conceptually complex story (idk something like if you when you die you discover you are god and every other being in existence), write it, keep refining till your teacher gives you full marks and straight up memorise that for the paper lol

sorry for the long rant !!!! english is very different to the sciences and there's a lot more indirect work involved in the background compared to the sciences, so getting a top grade is not as cut-and-dried and advice generally doesn't work for everyone. if you could share like the specific questions on the specific papers i can probably give more direct tips lol

good luck with ur studies !! and dankje

Also if you do you have any top tips for poetry comparison? This is probably one of my weakest parts.

Welcome to GYG! I also strongly disliked language based subjects at gcse, very brave that youre doing the IB considering you dislike languages!
Lmk if you have any questions about revision, I did all your subjects except music and I did Spanish instead of French (some different exam boards tho) and got all 8s and 9s in these plus A on FSMQ.

This is so helpful, thank you so much! yeah, I do coursework and my final one is due in on friday
Also if you do you have any top tips for poetry comparison? This is probably one of my weakest parts.

hope your final coursework submission went smoothly ! this is just what i personally do with poetry comparison:

you should be comparing concepts, not themes or techniques. for example (i'm yeeting this from my englit mock paper from january) the poems were 'prayer before birth' and 'half-caste' and the question was something about how the speakers express their concerns about society. your topic sentence will guide each paragraph - you could write "both poems address the reader directly to plead for change" then "however, while 'PBB' pleads the reader for assurance, advice and direction, 'half-caste' condemns the reader to demonstrate where society is lacking" and go on that :]

quote integration is so important!!!!! you need to make the examiner not even notice there IS a quote. don't write "the quote "quote" says", write something like "the speaker implies that the ambiguous "them"". genuinely just add quotation marks to even one word.

structure is the secret weapon here because people don't write about it enough. sprinkle analysis of the structure in every single point you make. compare where the volta is, the opening vs closing tones/shifts, the refrains (with refrains ALWAYS bring up how it represents emphasis or obsession. it's applicable all around even to unseen poetry).

on structure you should also talk about the visual imagery and layout of the poem - blessing is in fragments representing the scarcity and unpredictability of water or something. just make it up and sound confident - as long as you've brought it up it's good :3

and honestly just commit to what you say. doesn't matter if you think you're making it up or if you're just waffling (i'm ALWAYS waffling), use declarative, certain verbs and words. NEVER hedge and say "perhaps" unless you're really unsure. if it's original and you sound confident you'll get the marks (in my experience LOL)

and this is a cheeky one but if you're like my classmates you probably use one highlighter per anthology text and take your teacher's annotations. if you don't, good for you, but if you do, you'll have the same analysis as everyone from your exam centre so you can't capitalise on marks. i recommend straight up taking analysis points from quizlet (look up each poem on it) and using 3 highlighters per text (language + structure + form/tone). for englang, i loooove https://www.theonlinegoverness.com/english-languagehttps://www.theonlinegoverness.com/english-language. i don't think the copying is a concern here because you'll be writing it live in the exam. plus it's more fun to look at :3

what's your best subject? if it's sciences................... i'll be asking you for tips 💯

The thing with bio exam questions really is practice and then carefully reading the mark schemes so you know what key terms were needed. Paying attention to command words is also really important, exam boards often have definitions of these you can look at so you know what youre being asked to- eg you need to know the difference between describe, compare, explain etc. Theres some guidance on command words on revisionowl which you might find helpful 🙂

and honestly just commit to what you say. doesn't matter if you think you're making it up or if you're just waffling (i'm ALWAYS waffling), use declarative, certain verbs and words.

Thank you this is great! Yeah the coursework went pretty well thank you, I'm so pleased it's all done now! Welll would say i'm pretty good at science but my best subjects are definitely history, french, spanish and english (but I need as many tips as I can get due to my teacher)
