The Student Room Group

Confused about my future education as a refugee. Kindly help.

I’m a 19-year-old (soon turning 20) legal refugee in the UK. I have SSC/HSSC (80%) from my home country. They are equivalent to AS level along with IELTS 7.5 (valid until 2027).
I’m starting GCSE English & Maths in September 2026, and the exams are in Summer 2027.

I want to go to university specifically in the medical field ( not medicine or dentistry)

Can GCSE English replace IELTS cause its validity will end in February 2027? Or would I still need to retake IELTS again despite having GCSEs English?

After completing my GCSEs English and Mathematics, what should be my next step?
Foundation Year or Access to HE in Science??

[I have already been to some local colleges so kindly don't recommend that. I just want to get guidance as I don't know the system here and I have been searching around]

Thanks:smile:

Biomed specifically

Yes, GCSE English will usually be accepted to meet any English Language requirement and most Unis will set a minimum GCSE Maths grade for a STEM degree. An Access to HE would probably the best route into a degree, but check carefully exactly what is required by each Uni for the degree subject you want to do - both the title of the Access course and the specific units within it. More info - Access to Higher Education

There are also specific 'Foundation' style courses available at some Universities for applicants in your situation that you could take instead of an Access course :
CertHE Foundation Years | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
Degrees with a foundation year | Education | The University of Sheffield

Thanks for the info! So we are looking at 2 years in total before I start uni right? Tons of unis were accepting my current qualifications cause I have valid IELTS but I wanted to get to know the UK education system so didn’t apply via UCAS.

Its probably worth you talking to a relevant adviser at a University to find out exactly what they would they would accept or require ie. would you need additional GCSEs if you had taken their Foundation course etc - even though you are not technically a mature student, here is the sort of person who it would probably be worth talking to - Mature and part-time students | Current students | University of Bristol

Good afternoon,

There are lots of medicine-related courses at the University of Reading. More information can be found here: Medical Sciences, Degrees in Healthcare, Biomedical Sciences, and BSc Biological Sciences.

The Undergraduate entry requirements can be found on the webpage. However, if you cannot find the answers, then I recommend you contact the Admissions.

There is an ambassador scheme at the University of Reading where prospective students can message current students; more information is available here. They will be able to provide you with an insider's perspective on the degree and answer any questions you may have about the course.

All the best,
Ella

Hi,

I would not rely on advice from a forum in a complicate situation like yours, we might be wrong even with the best intentions. The best is to contact directly some university, and the career advisor at the school you are currently attending for the GCSE. After GCSE, you need the A levels, that means further 2 years, and then you apply to uni via UCAS. This is what the UK students do at least, UK universities accept qualifications from other countries, but you need to check with them. I wish you all the best for your future
