How respected is an Open University degree?

Hey! I'm considering studying with the Open University and would love to know how respected OU degrees are by employers or in your experience. Any OU grads or people who know about employer attitudes, please share your thoughts!

Employers LOVE Open Uni degrees, they are even a major benefit in an employer's eyes as they see that someone is willing to do the work. All the OU degrees are accredited, which is something you should look for when choosing a degree. I'm currently doing a CertHE with the Open Uni, which is the equivalent of a first year of a degree. I have chosen to do an Open qualification and I love it! I specilise in Mathematics, Statistics and Natural Sciences. I applied to universities on UCAS and my dream uni, UEA, just gave me an unconditional offer to study a bachelor's in Geophysics! The OU has amazing degrees, and I recommend you go for it! What are you thinknig of doing? 🙂

Thank you!! I’m thinking of studying one of their psychology degrees i’m not sure which one yet. I’m currently still in sixth form and was wondering if I could go straight to a degree with them after I’ve completed my alevels? I don’t like the idea of moving away from home and I struggle with large amounts of people so I was thinking that the open uni could be a good option!

I hear you! I'm Autistic and don't do well with people, and I needed time to figure things out for myself. The OU is amazing and has given me great things to study in this time. If you want to do them after A level, go ahead, I started studying with the OU a few months after quitting A Levels, I hated how A Levels worked, but I LOVE how the OU works! Go for it!!!!! 🙂

I have an OU graduate in my Maths department and they are a great teacher. Their degrees are respected and the support is amazing for any special needs e.g. blind or dyslexics can have material on audio.

If you are thinking of doing a psychology degree, make sure you do one that is accredited by BPS. It just makes sure you are suitably qualified (in the first instance) to register as a chartered psychologist on graduation, and will make it much easier if you want to practice as a psychologist and/or do further training. Not all of the OU (or other uni) psychology degrees are accredited by BPS, so it's worth double-checking your specific course.

I’ve not studied with the OU, but I know employers definitely think positively of it. I’ve heard because it shows that you basically managed your own learning, and it proves to them that you have great organisation and time management skills.

I would agree re respectability of OU in the employment market.

I did an OU degree (First Class) and it secured me a place on a fantastic MSc at a globally renowned institution for the subject. So OU also holds its own in the world of postgrad study.

All I will say, is that distance learning requires much more self-motivation than a standard undergraduate degree (especially during dissertation time). Make sure you are the kind of person who can commit to that. If that's not you and you need a bit more of a kick up the bum to get going and keep going, go to a standard uni.

Earning a degree through the Open University is widely respected because it proves to employers that you possess exceptional self-discipline and time-management skills. By balancing rigorous academic standards with real-world responsibilities, you demonstrate a level of maturity and "grit" that traditional graduates often haven't had to test yet. Most recruiters view the qualification as a badge of honor, signaling that you are a highly motivated self-starter capable of thriving in any professional environment.
