Hi Olivernew123,
Thanks for your interest in the University of Exeter. Generally speaking, as Further Maths is not listed as a requirement for the course it should be perfectly possible to achieve a first class grade without having studied that particular A Level. The first year of most university degrees is designed such that everyone is taught the fundamentals of the subject you are studying, regardless of what different academic background you might have before university. Alongside those with different A Levels, students might also have studied the IB, or equivalent international qualifications, and so it is likely that you will not be the only student without Further Maths. I'd suggest the bigger determinant of success is going to be your attitude and effort invested into studying once you are actually at university, rather than what you've studied before.
Are you able to visit the university at one of our upcoming offer holder days? You can find more details
here, and should also receive details about times and dates via email after you've applied. This would be a great chance to visit the university and chat to academics and students from the department. They'd be able to advise and share first hand experiences on what the course is like and what maths skills may be required, including any modules where there is an overlap with the content from Further Maths. If you can't visit in person, there are also options for virtual offer holder days, or you may wish to contact us using
Unibuddy. This will let you message directly with current students. If you filter by subject, you can find students best placed to answer your question. For example George is currently studying Economics, and so might be able to help advise on the difficulty of different modules and the relative benefit of having studied Further Maths.
I hope that helps to answer your question. Ultimately I would advise you to go for the course and university that you like the most. If you're in the location you enjoy, doing a course you are interested in, then you are more likely to be motivated to do well and achieve a First, irrespective of whatever qualifications you might have achieved before university.
Please get in touch if you have any further questions.
