Warwick GEM work experience requirement

Hi, I'm considering a career change into medicine. I am struggling with Warwick's 70h work experience requirement, mainly because most of Warwick's students seem to have worked as HCAs or in other roles (nurses, phlebotomists, physios, etc.). The issue is that paid work outside of my current employment is not really an option for me - I can only do volunteering in the evenings and weekends, but I cannot find a volunteer role which would meet Warwick's 'hands-on' requirement for providing medical or social care. I would appreciate to hear from any current Warwick GEM students or anyone who received an offer, without having worked as an HCA or other care professional. Unfortunately, I can't afford to quit my current job to be able to get the hours e.g. through HCA bank. Many thanks!

Hi!

I am a current Warwick GEM student and also a student ambassador, here are a few ideas of experience you could get before applying!
Depending on what city you are in, you could volunteer with St John Ambulance (this is what I did), I was both a youth leader and an adult first aider but it will be the adult first aider role being out on events that would mainly get you your hands on hours needed for Warwick (as you need to be providing care). There is also the option to volunteer in care homes or in a GP surgery as well as this would be easier for you to balance alongside work.

If you have any questions about the GEM course itself, student life or anything I would be happy to answer!

Best Wishes,
Tess (Student Ambassador)
