Durham colleges

I would love to hear some more nuanced opinions of colleges based on personal experience. My current top 3 are 1. Cuths
2. Hilde+Bede
3. Chads
I have no preference over self or catered which I know is a large thing people consider. I do prefer gowned ( although I know cuths isn’t)
Cuths and chads are my favourites however the prospect of sharing a room or being put in the further away version of cuths is slightly shining a negative light on my opinion of them. If not for the high likelihood of shared rooms I would pick chads as my number one. Any opinions on these? Or any opinions on any others I’d love to hear! I love the idea of a college with a lot of community and spirit as well as traditions.

As I gather, some colleges have larger numbers of Private School pupils. Or preferred by State School pupils. Or strongly sport-orientated. Or historically-minded ! I think a good read about which college naturally draws which general demographic, will guide you well. It's not set in stone though ! But also a visit will consolidate you ideas - as trudging up a hill with your books and shopping can put some people off.

Perhaps have a look at the 2025 UCAS Applicants to Durham strand - there may be some worthwhile comments there (dated post Offers last year 2025, when college choices were being made). Good Luck !

This is one decision where you may need to ask ChatGPT to generate pros and cons across your options and then it should provide a list based on your priorities.

If you are flexible with Colleges, you should consider:

St Mary’s

University

Grey

Hatfield

Trevs

Hilde+Bede

and so on.
