EU Independent student starting a degree course, applying for a maintenance loan

Hi,
I have started a degree program as a mature (30 years old) EU independent student with a settled status. Is it necessary for me to provide evidence of my residence in the UK for a period of three years before joining in the course? If so, is a NI number sufficient? I have been working in UK for the last 3 years.

Hi Marmor1, can you please confirm the following:

What country are you originally from?
When was your Settled Status awarded?
Is this EU Settled Status or Indefinite Leave to Remain?
When did you course start exactly?

Thank you, Stephen

Hi,

I'm from Latvia.
The settled status was awarded in October 2021.
It is the EU settled status.
The course started in September 2025.
Thanks

Hi again, EU Nationals can receive support as a home student if they meet the following criteria:

Be an ordinarily resident in England on the first day of the first academic year the course

Have been granted EU Settled Status prior to the first day of the first academic year the course

Have been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for the 3 years prior to the first day of the first academic year the course

If you meet this criteria, we would advise to complete a PN1 form for to request the change to home student support.

You can locate the required form here:

https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-forms/y/studying-full-time-and-qualify-for-a-tuition-fee-loan-and-a-maintenance-loan-full-support/apply-for-student-loans-and-grants/2025-to-2026/no

Current estimated application processing timescales are 6-8 weeks.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Does SFE ask to see any proof of me being present in the UK, such as proof of employment or NI records? Or is some other proof required?

Thanks

We won't need that kind of proof, that's okay. So long as you have Settled Status (which you do) and have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of your course, then that's normally all we need to know in terms of your residency.

Thanks, Graeme
