Southampton Uni - Liberal Arts

Hi! Does anyone know what kind of things I would study in Liberal Arts at Southampton? I would pick English, Philosophy, or Politics - how many pathways do I pick and what do they entail? Thanks!
Hi @cnicholas13,

Great question! Liberal Arts is such a cool degree because you get the chance to almost build your own degree from a wide range of optional modules.

From what I can see on the website (as of today - this could be subject to change), if you took the Humanities pathway, you could choose modules in archaeology, english, history, linguistics, or philosophy. If you chose the Social Sciences pathway you could choose from modules in criminology, politics or sociology.

As your interest looks like mainly Humanities leaning, it does sound as though the Humanities pathway would be best for you. This would open up study in English and Philosophy.

So first off, have a think about which pathway looks most appealing to you. In your first year you'll have a few compulsory modules in your main subject (say, English), and then be able to choose two optional modules from the other courses in your pathway.

In second year, you'll study half your year as a liberal arts module, half as optional modules. Going into third year, it only gets 'freer' from there as you focus on your dissertation and more optional modules.

I'd also say to head over to the website and explore the modules: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/courses/liberal-arts-degree-ba#main

You can choose your pathway and look through all of the modules you *must* and *could* study in your first year. Why not have an explore, and see what sparks your interest the most?

Hope that helps!
