Looking for uni recommendations:

I'm looking at doing French at uni next year, however I am finding it difficult to find reliable uni recommendations. For reference, I am currently studying Psychology, Religious Studies and History so will be taking it from a beginner level. Also, I want a uni in a modern city but apart from that I don't really mind about the location. One I've been interested in is Leeds, however the post graduation employment levels and salary are low. From past experience, is that something I should seriously take into consideration when choosing?

There are similar 'you don't have to have studied French at A level' courses at Manchester and Queens Belfast, However, I'm wondering if you are so keen on languages, why you have not studied one at A level?

In terms of grad prospects, anyone who speaks a language is not going to be short of work opportunities - look at GCHQ, MI5 and Government Fast Stream. Just remember that its you who builds your grad career not the Uni badge, and the initial starting salary will increase as your career develops. Example - Language Specialists French or German - Civil Service Jobs - GOV.UK

Hi @super_st☆r

It’s great that you already have a clear idea of what you want to study and the kind of environment you’re looking for.

When it comes to choosing where to study, graduate employment and salary stats can be useful, but there can be other factors to consider. For language degrees, outcomes can vary depending on what you do after university for example, whether you go into teaching, translation, international business, or postgraduate study. It’s important to look at the quality of teaching, opportunities and how well the course supports your language development.

You might want to browse some of the courses at Royal Holloway, which offer French from beginner level as part of a Modern Languages programme. You can combine French with subjects like History, Politics, or International Relations, and spend a year abroad to build fluency and confidence. Our Admissions team can give you more details about entry requirements and course options. You can email them at [email protected].

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any further questions!

Best wishes,
