Im tied between Uni of Surrey and Uni of Southampton. What things should I consider when making my decision?

Hi there!

It’s great you’re thinking about applying to Southampton! I’m currently in my third year studying Geography and absolutely love it here!

Open days
Personally when I was choosing which uni to go to, a lot of my opinions and choices were based off from going to the open days. Open days are a great opportunity to see what the uni’s like, where it is, the atmosphere, as well as what the course and the teaching staff are like. So if you haven’t already gone to an open day I would definitely recommend!

The degree itself
A big part of my decision to go to Southampton was based on the module choices they have available as part of the degree. For geography I really wanted part of the degree to be about economics and when I found out they offered Economic Geography as a module, I knew it was the degree for me. I would recommend having a look at what modules are included in the degree you’re looking for! You can find any degree at Southampton here.

Accommodation and costs
Another thing to consider is accommodation prices too! You can find all first year accommodation provided by the University of Southampton here. For second and third year I’ve lived in a student house which for both years have been very reasonably priced. I would recommend searching up how much on average university students pay in second and third year for their accommodations in the cities you’re thinking of applying to.

The city
I would say Southampton is quite a small, green city, so if that’s something you’re looking for then it’s an ideal place to live and study. It’s not a busy, chaotic environment so if you do quite like the buzz of a massive city, then I would say Southampton might not be ideal.
