ADHD diagnosis in third year

I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD halfway through my third year, and I’m really struggling at the moment. A lot of things finally make sense looking back, especially issues with concentration, organisation, and burnout, but unfortunately my grades have already been badly affected.

I’m now at a point where I’m close to dropping out because I don’t think my current results reflect my actual ability, especially now that I’m only just starting to get support in place.

The problem is that I already used my gift year on a foundation year, so I’m really worried about funding. Does anyone know if there is any additional funding or allowance (e.g. through SFE, Compelling Personal Reasons, or anything disability-related) that would allow me to redo third year after a late ADHD diagnosis?

If anyone has been through something similar or has any advice on next steps (funding, uni support, appeals, or taking time out), I’d really appreciate hearing from you. I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed and unsure what options I actually have.

Thank you

Hi Lola_2,

Compelling Personal Reasons (CPR) can be awarded for failure to complete the most recent course or repeat study. There are many different reasons as to why a student can have their studies affected and the list is not exhaustive, as the reasons for CPR will depend on the student’s own circumstances.

All CPR claims are unique and will be granted on their own merit. Evidence can include, but not limited to:

- medical evidence from a GP or medical professional (Physical/Digital Evidence or Online services from their own GP)
- a letter from the university / social services on headed paper
- a letter from the clergy or a professional person on headed paper
- a death certificate / a birth certificate

The above list is not exhaustive and any evidence that can support your claim should be sent to us for consideration.

Where applicable, we recommend the evidence:

- is signed and dated
- confirms the reason why you could not continue with your studies; and
- when this took place (date specific).
